Hi peeps. Im rb, a newbie here. Anyways, will somebody (if not everybody) help me decide on which DSLR to buy? I need an honest, objective opinion here. Ok, I'm a film SLR hobbyist/enthusiast. Now, with all the hypes/technologies/post-processing tools & techniques out there, I already feel the need of buying an entry-level DSLR. Now, I'm thorn between Nikon & Canon (which by the way is very common, lol). Im considering these factors: (1) Should I buy either of the two, which brand has the most affordable "carry-around" lenses? Oh, I'm not planning to make this a career in the near future. So I don't wanna buy different kinds of lenses for every type of photographs. What I just really intend is just to have an "all-around" lenses for my everyday life. You know what I mean? I hope. (2) Low-maintenance. Which brand has the most available and cheap parts? I hope you guys can help me. Thank you ssoooo much in advance..

I too am a film shooter and have just recently tried the digital realm. I have shot Nikons exclusively in 35mm. My entry into digital was with a little Kodak "Moment maker." Even caked in mud and with a nice coating of insect repellent on the lens, it took amazing pictures. Just very small files (3.1mp). A home made filter attachment was my only accessory. The art seems to be in the post processing. I have recently switched to the Canon G9 for my digital work. As for DSLR cameras, I believe that Canon probably holds the crown for state of the art and a huge bag of tricks (lenses) to go with it. The latest and greatest comes with a very high price tag. Nikon holds the crown for versatility. I know any of my lenses for my F5 will work on any Nikon DSLR. If I am not mistaken, I can mount a 25 year-old AI lens from my F2 on a Nikon DSLR. It will be manual focus of course, but will work. There are many bargains to be found in the Nikon line. The best all around Nikon lens I use, the 24mm-85mm "G" was also the cheapest! IMHO, as long as you follow good photo techniques, tripod, slow ISO, bracketing, etc, with good post processing, your entry-level DSLR will produce amazing pictures. What ever you decide, be sure that it can shoot in RAW.
Good luck!

Hi Tom. Thanks a lot for your reply.. Really appreciate it. I thought this will be of great help for me. Again, thanx a lot! Hey one more question, you're saying that Nikon has the cheapest all-around lens?

Yes, and don't confuse cheap with bad. In the Nikon line, the "DX" is for digital only. They are inexpensive "Kit" lenses and work very well. The standard AF lenses are interchangeable between DSLR & film bodies. Just remember the sensor size in a DSLR is smaller than that of the standard 35mm film (24mmx36mm). To approximate the focal length for a DSLR using a standard AF lens, multiply by 1.5. For example, a 200mm tele in film is 200mm, but on a DSLR will be equivalent to a 300mm. Note that this is the same for wide angles, only backwards. A 24 mm lens will not be nearly as wide on a DSLR camera as on a film camera. Going the other way, DX lens to film body will not work. It does not produce an image size large enough to cover the sensor. There is a flood of used Nikon AF lenses out there for great prices. A lot of people want the latest & greatest Canon and are dumping their Nikon gear. Again good luck!
