The Photography Network - PictureSocial

browsing thru the photos varjous people have posted, I am impressed with the quality that is showing up. Hence in order to help me learn more about the photography experience I wonder if there is some way the site administrators could provide the wherewithal for the postees to include exif data and photoshoping/computer darkroom manipulation explanations for their postings.

This was kicked around a few weeks back but never caught fire. I don't know that EXIF would be that much help, but possibly. I personally only shoot in the manual or custom modes, but PP info probably be a great deal of help as several new techniques have been appearing lately. You would probably be better served to just ask the photographer. I know that I have had several queries lately and seen the process appear in other photos.
however, even shooting in manual or custom modes you must have at least aperature, focal length, iso and shutter speed. I find those interesting when trying to decide if the photo has been manipulated or not and whether I am able to try those settings to get similar results.
don'tchathunk?
I agree with you that they may important to some people and I wish you luck in getting photographers to post exif. I personally wouldn't use it because I find it highly unlikely that I would be shooting in the exact same situation at the same scenery. I do however set ISO, shutter speeds, aperture and focal length along with white balance, saturation and contrast. my argument is that anyone who is capable of using all this information doesn't need it, they already have it. PP manipulations aren't recorded anywhere automatically that I know of but I have started recording the some pp in my titles. my code are letters after the camera code as follows a = adjust contrast and brightness, c = clean, dj = deJPEG, s = sharpen, dn = denoise, e = enlarge and Detail means I have cropped. In the unlikely event that you would like to have the EXIF from one of my photos, I'll be happy to provide all that I can, that's part of the reason that I participate in this site.
I totally agree, George. I doubt if there is any way to automatically capture the EXIF data when a picture is posted, but perhaps just putting these fields in as blanks we could fill in as we post our shots may encourage folks to do just that. I try to include info on the shots I post. Since I work with PS CS3 and Bridge, the data is there, all I have to do is remember to include it in my comments. The problem is recalling what I did in PS. Some of my shots go back to the year 2000, so its hard to recall what steps I took during the manipulation process. Having said that, I will add that I'll do it if you will... hehe... so there ya go. Oh yeah... and I think folks should use the map location option as well. For me, it just increases my interest to know WHERE the shot was taken.
you got it dave. the exif data and all pp manipulations will be comin' at yah.
taking good photos is often as much about knowing your camera and its limitations/capabilities as anything, and if a shot is taken on auto or program or some other automatic setting, without taking the time to understand what the camera is doing it makes it difficult to replecate the camera's technical capability (does this make sense?)
commentary on pp process will come later.
have a great day.
I think that some very basic information could be useful, such as:
Focal length
Exposure: Shutter speed, aperture.
Filtration: polarizer, split neutral density, softar, color correction (Some of us still shoot film)
Tripod: yes or no
ISO speed
Off camera flash(s)
There is a lot more to photography than than reading a histogram.
Wow! I had completely forgotten about Split ND filters and Graduated ND filters. thank you Tom
+well tom, I think that the things you suggested would certainly make for a better learning atmosphere. Now all we need to know is whether the site administrators have the ability/desire to make it so.
There is actually a way for seeing EXIF data in some of the photos uploaded into Picture Social (hence SOME), but it only works with digital images, not film or scanned images and this method is kind of intrusive because it's without the owner's consent (well you can ask the owner's permission to look at the EXIF data at a particular image to make it less intrusive). I noticed that a lot of people here uploaded their photos straight from their camera without editing it, and this should make it easy.

What you have to do is to open the full version of the image (by clicking the image from the page), save it to your computer. Once it saved, right click on it and click properties. On properties window, click on Summary tab and if it's in simple view, click on advanced. If it's already in advanced view then there's the EXIF information. The information given is pretty comprehensive, that's including camera's type and I know George that you're using Olympus E-510 (I wasn't peeking at your profile when I wrote this but from your EXIF info from one of your photos), lol! I found this way also works with some of the edited photos =)
thanks reza. I am familiar with the process you described and have used it when I have been particularly interested on how a shot was accomplished.
However, if the exif data was evident on the photo, those less experienced and trying to learn, would be able to access the info easily, and thereby be encouraged to maybe explore their camera more completely rather than their computer.
Anything to encourage better photography methinks.
Have a great day.
uh-huh... or we could all add our exif data when we post a pic...
http://www.photome.de/download_en.html On this site is free exif data software and plugin for FirefoxMozilla browser. When open picture in browser then with right click open menu and choice option "open with PhotoMe".You will see exif data, only when exif data be erased for purpose then see nothing.I have one more stand alone program exiftool (it is free). No need installation, only drag picture on exiftool icon and you will see everything was don in camera and post processing program.Include how much is set white balance, saturation, clarity, shadows, filters, highlights, noise and sharpening.
