Hey everyone,

I am currently thinking about investing in a second lens for my Nikon D40x. The three I have been looking at most are: Nikkor 18-135mm afs DX (comes standard with the D80), the 55-200mm afs VR, the 18-200mm afs VRII and the 18-200mm afs without VR.

I do very general photography so would like a good multi-purpose lens. I am on a relatively tight budget at the moment, so the 18-200mm VRII would be really stretching it.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Dan

I have the 55-200mm afs VR and its a really good lense but it does get a bit annoying having to swap them all the time and you do sometime miss good shot becuase you cant swap them fast enough so if you have the choice i would go for the 18-200mm

How good is the VR on the 55-200mm? Do you find it a useful feature at all?

Dude I just orded this baby with the VR. *haven't gotten it yet* I did some research on it, and well, without VR you can see a difference. I will see if I can dig up the link. The 18-200 is an amazing lens but it is spendy. If you are getting really serious about photogrpaghy and have the spare cash go for it, but if not, the 55-200 DX VR AFS is a good lens. I'm a broke college student and I sadly save up for lenses LOL so for the price if I turned this lens down I'd be insane.

Lets see linky....

Ok so like don't take his word as gold but he seems to have an idea of what he's talking about. Frankly, you can't find a lens like this for that price.

Also look for the lens on like Amazon, it usually retails for $249 or so but I got mine cheaper through them.

Good Luck!

Great, thanks for your fantastic advice! I found it for a really low price actually, and it was the one I was considering most anyway. Let me know how you find it when it arrives!

I have the 55-200mm afs VR as well and I find that I hardly use it because it's quite troublesome to keep swapping the lenses around and I tend to carry a small camera bag for convenience so I end up not having the space to bring along another lens. And I agree with David that you might miss a good shot when you can't swap the lenses fast enough. You might even drop the lenses in a frenzy!!!
I'm actually thinking of selling both my 55-200m and kit lens and getting a 18-200m.
If you find that you might grow slack after awhile of handling two lenses (I know I did lol) , then I suggest that you go for the 18-200m. :)
