I have a 18-200mm 3.5-5.6 VR Lens for my Nikon D80 and I love it. I shoot alot of emergency stuff and some of it is at night. I perfer not to use my flash, I am on the move alot so no tripod either and ISO at 1600.
First thing I shot when I got the lens was an accident on the highway, only traffic lights, a few car lights and fire truck lights...the photos were amazing. I also shoot alot of fire at night and I still get blur but not as bad.
Shooting the moon and things of that nature are a bit different and I do use my tripod for that. Maybe this helps.
