Im currently doing a school assignment on becoming a professional photographer. There is one question im having slight trouble answering, what levels of education is offered to get into this industry?
The way i see it i can answer this in many ways. You can be self taught and take paid photos for people you are close to, you could be the person that takes the school photographs when that day comes around, you could own your own studio and sell the photographs to the public.
My question to all who read this is what makes a photographer a professional.
Is it getting paid for taking your best friends wedding photographs and being paid?
Or is it taking class and having been professionally taught?
If you ask me a professional photographer is someone how gets paid for taking pictures. But i do think that there are many levels of pro's. Like you were saying, taking your friends wedding pics and getting a little money, to getting the big bucks for high end photo's like National Geographic, Playboy, Time, Pepole, etc....
Hayley, for competition purposes, the definition of a professional photographer is someone who makes 51% or more of their livelihood taking, making and printing photos. On a more realistic level, I believe someone might consider themselves a pro if they make any money at it. I know I'd be happy to cover the cost of my equipment! LOL
