This is supposed to be site for photographers at all levels. It should be about quality not quantity of photos you are uploading. All photos that are taken are not good. I have litterally hundreds of photos in my collections that I would not make public because they are bad or not quite completed. Are some photographers so desperate for public attention that they will upload anything just to get attention? C'mon now let get real. Quality must be the goal, photography is a art let not cheapen this site by uploading thousands and thousands of photo sthat should have never made it out of our computers.
Well put jadeast. May I say this too. First, beginners just getting photography will have work we "pros" may not consider quality but they are also here to learn. Being exposed to good work will certainly help them. Also, if opinions are given they should be done tactfully and with compassion. Compassion should exist because we all are photographers and love photograpy.
Finallly Richard S. started a great discussion group called Photo Critique. He warned that some comments may be brutal but anyone joining know that upfront. I dont believe in brutal critiques, I prefer the compliment sandwich. Basically if I dont have anything nice to say, I say nothing......leave no comment. I dont want to step on anothers hopes, dreams and loves :)
I have to agree with Mark and Douglas both in this issue. I am nothing more then an "Amateur or Hobbiest", but I DO know the "Techy" side of things. The more "Crap"... as in blurry photos, family snapshots and such that fill up the hard drives that this site is housed on, the less space for actual honest real shots that people want others to comment on (Good or Bad). I know there are a few people in this discussion who look down on someone criticizing another users shots, but if that is not the reason you are here... then what is it? Just to talk to people from other "Countries or around the world"? Heck you can do that on normal chat sites.
Back to the "Techy" side. If the hosts of this site have the hard drives filled up with mindless snapshots, then they will have to pay for more space. If they can not get advertising to cover the extended costs, then someone will and that someone may be us. I do not have that many photos on here at any one time for that reason. If after a while I do not have a comment on a photo I remove it. I will never be a professional photographer, but I would definitely like someone who is let me know how to improve what I am doing. That is why I am here and I thought was the purpose of this site.
I have now read all the comments and as it is a group discussion and interest I have given my opinion and I think we just have to jump the hundreds of photo's that are at times posted that are records of grandchildren and holidays and in great quantity and bad repetative quality and like one other participant in this discussion said just enjoy what we do and enjoy our friends on PS
I have the dearest friends on this site and where it is sometimes nice to discuss a problem I would not leave or go somewhere else and give up my friends for anything. It soes not matter where you go theere is always problems but it is sometimes good to air your thoughts and and from many thought and others opinions comes sometimes a anunderstanding of these problems and we are able to slot them into the right postion and cope with them better and put them aside and become more tolerant of something which is just apart of everyday life everywhere
I do not find it annoying to have to flip 15 of 20 pages of clicks to get to the clicks I am looking for to brouse on and comment on it really is only a few menutes of my life and that is nothing
I have enjoyed this discussion. And when it is finished I bet you any money you like everyone will feel better
Hve a lovely day and may it be filled with happiness and lots of smiles and laughter
Yea, In my opinion, firstly, You are right, cos we shouldnt made this site filled up with bad photos, mainly with photos like too noisy, or blurred out or somehting else. But in the other way, we just cant stop to upload the bad ones, because its not right. I think, bad photos can be good ones in the same time, now I mean, that a blurred photo can still have a perfect mood or a perfect angle. And on the other side, if the best photographers here on this site see the bad or low quality photos, then they can reply to the author and tell whats wrong with the photo or how should it be corrected, so we can get good tips for our bad photos. But all together, the question is right: Good or bad photo?
Again, I think we are chasing the wrong rabbitt... Problem is NOT "good or bad photo" ( who will be then the all-righteous judge for this ?!?) but mainly the QUANTITY uploaded. I've seen couple of days ago a lot of above average photos uploaded in a huge "movement" on several pages. I repeat, some of these photos were AT LEAST worth looking at. My reaction was that after seeing about 10 of them I flipped through the others like a speed train and only stopped - with relief - when I found another author... If more of us are doing the same - and as I read above it appears to be so - the real LOSER is the person who uploaded all of them at once, blocking several pages and LOOSING a correct and a constructive feed-back.
So, apart of maybe asking the moderators to somehow limit the number of uploads per day, I think the situation will solve by itself in (short) time. Another thing I suggest ( and I see it is not done on this site) is to use the post facilty in the Groups discussions. Again, the moderators could find a way to add the photos posted in the discussions to each posters' page to be available for others not in the Group but who visit the respective page at a later time. This way we will participate more intensely in Group discussions which may become a real exchange and in the same time the main area will be less crowded. What do you think ?
I agree with Gabriel because who have time to look all this photos uploaded at once. All must have opportunity to upload photos (bad or good).Only one solution for this is limit per day.
I think I got confused because of the topic. Is this about quality, quanity or both? Because there are comments that reflect both. I would agree that a limit would be ok. But I disagree with people "photographers" on here are willing to get upset over crap photos. This is indeed a place for help and all that good jazz. Some of us aren't up to what others par may be... heck, in fact I'm my worst critque. But at the same time some of these people may beleive their photos are beautiful works of art to where some of them may find them...so so. I guess unless some limit is enforced my suggestion would be if there are tons of photos and you don't want to look at them.... then don't? But unless you're asked for comments on someones photo wouldn't it just be wrong to tell someone their pictures look horrible. I don't know... I'm confused
Ok... I've read all the replies and there seem to be two basic trains of thought here:
1. We are a site of serious photographers looking to improve our skills through the feedback we get on the shots we post. We resent the misuse of this site.
2. Yes, we're serious, but hey... live and let live.. If someone wants to post crap, who am I, or anyone else for that matter, to definitively say its crap? One man's trash is another man's treasure.
We are all grown-ups here and we know what's what. Way back in the 1970's, an older, wiser woman named Tessie Jones said something to me I never forgot. "If its sh*t, its sh*t, and if it is, it stinks." Its not the 1970's anymore, but I don't think the validity of that statement has lessened one bit with the passage of time. A good deal of what we're looking at on this site is sh*t, and its time to say it stinks.
