This coming weekend I am going to see an air show with the Thunderbirds and I will bring a Canon Rebel XT with me.
As the show will be around 10:00 AM and the sky is bright at this time, I would like to know the best settings possible to photograph those fast aircrafts with the best photo quality. I have a 18-55MM and a 75-300MM Canon lenses and also filters like circular, linear polarizer and a GND.
Please send me your tip in how to photograph those quick moments when those aircrafts fly at high speed. As there will be opportunity to visit those machines, I want to photograph their interior and other details permitted.
Thanks
Most important is location, sun must be behind you. When I take air show photos I am afraid about speed. When fly low they have low speed and when they are high on sky, you have plenty of time.I have sunny day an set AV mode,F11,
exposure 1/400 and 100ISO.
You may want to also set your camera to AI Servo so that you can stay focused on the jets while they are moving, This mode is for moving subjects when the focusing distance keeps changing. While you hold down the shutter button halfway, the subject will be focused continuously.
Steve:
Thank you for you tip about air show photography.
You have gorgeous photos in your site and I would like to know what kind of lens you used to photograph those Thunderbirds because it is so sharp and clear. I saw people at show on 10/12/08 with all kinds of lens. I was using a Canon 75-300 MM f 4-5.6 III and at the time of the show the sun was in front of the public.
