What is HDR? How do you do it?

I've had my DSLR for a long time already but there's one thing I haven't tried yet.

...HDR! what is HDR? Can someone explain to me how you produce HDR quality images? From what i see here in picture social, HDR pics really look good. All I know about HDR is that, you get 3 photographs, the first one, under exposure, 2nd, normal then 3rd, high exposure... but that's all I know. Is there any software I can use for producing HDR images? :)

ok .... thanks for all .. i think we all know now the softwear for the HDR and how we can use it i will not add any thing in this part because the photomatixe is the best way to get an hdr image i will recommend to use photomatix pro 3.1 its the best.....

i just want to add (what is the hdr) it is high dynamic range imaging which means the range of values between light and dark areas in other words we can say by using HDR u will get the best oh shadows and the best of highlights and this websites will help to know more about it

G'Day You can use Photomatix to put your HDR Image together. You must use a tripod shoot in Raw for the best image shoot 5 exposures -2 -1 0 +1 +2 Use shutter speed for this not the aperture, If your camera supports auto bracketing use this on aperture priority. Load your photos into the program then use tone mapping to get the desired result.

If you are using a Canon 400D it has a AEB Function I believe it will only allow 1 shot Under 1 Shot Normal and 1 Shot Over. So I would shoot in Raw and set the Camera on Aperture Priority and if it has Mirror lock-Up use this to minimize camera shake and if you have a cable release use this, If you don't have a cable release you can set your camera on self timer. This will enable you to push the button on the camera and take your hand off so it's not vibrating when the shutter releases. hope this is of some use to you. Thanks for the tip Gary. :) so far i tried HDR but the problem is, even with ISO 100, the 400D makes too much noise. I tried using photomatix with its option "reduce noise". It helped but just a little. I remember Gabriel sharing me a software called "HotPixel"... I've never used it before but I believe it's a plug-in that is installed in your Photoshop.
