I have been dabbling in HDR photography for about a year now and was wondering, has anyone ever tried changing the F-Stop to set your exposures rather than changing your shutterspeed? I am curious what kind of results it would give, especially with a shallow DOF. If anyone has tried it, or attempts it before me, please let me know!

I haven't, but it sounds like an interesting experiment. Seems like the depth of field would get mixed up, but i'm not sure. I would be interested to see what happens.
I have read that this doesn't work for some reason. I've read so much I cant remember why though....

But I myself have tried it and could not get it to work successfully....

Give it a shot, it could all depend on the picture you are shooting at the time...
Im sure if it were something with a very busy background, it would cause pixel fragments and discoloration just like when you shoot an HDR shot with subtle movements in the background, but im still willing to give it a try.
I do F-stop HDR when i do my studio work and am shooting Sterling Jewelry. Silver is very hard to shoot because the range displayed is usualy beyond the CCD of the cameras ability to capture. I use + and - 2 ev to grab 3 shots then merge from the originals using PS.

This lets me get deeper darks and more detail in the highlights. It does add a up to 5 minuets more to workflow.

You can check out my page here, many of the studio shots displayed are HDR. Maybe i will post a side by side comparison, time willing. I will try and keep that in mind on my next studio sesson.
