Hey Louis,

I took two quarters of Photoshop CS2 and then have used it intermittently since then. There is so much to it. I recommend taking a class somewhere where you have lots of examples, step by step procedures, and homework!

My instructor, Carla, and her husband own a training company in Seattle. You can check them out at http://www.luminousworks.com/. Both of them have amazing skills. I know that her husband, Steve, also recently published a book. There are more details on their site.

Good luck!

Kari

I have a tendency to agree with Don and Tracy at least in the beginning. PS is such a powerful tool that much of it's power is beyond the needs of a beginning photographer. I recommend learnib to crop, to adjust contrast, intensity and saturation, as well as what all the tools will do for you. Don't be afraid to experiment, but don't do it on the original. open an image and use "save as" to give it another name. Ask any of the people who's work you would like to emulate how to do what you would like to to learn. I can't imagine anyone here that wouldn't be delighted to share what they know. Good luck!

Hi Louis, PS is a very nice, yet powerful, image editing application. So do not get frustrated, because no one knows everything there is to know about it. Thousands of websites can attest to that fact...take Don & Tracy's advice...basics! Learn a little each day, never work on originals, always on copies. Grow and get better, you'll find it very rewarding. If you need help, I'm sure there is always someone on here willing to advise. Hold on tight to your manuals, help files and even third party instruction manuals. A personal favorite of mine is "Photoshop CS2 Bible" by Deke McClelland and Laurie Ulrich Fuller. There are many others. Look some of them over at "Books-a-million" or Barnes & Noble". Stay encouraged buddy...see ya

I would say dive in and get your hands dirty with PS. Look for good tutorials that deal with subjects you are interested in. It might help to know what you want to use if for? Retouching? Digital painting?..It's easier to get you going in the right direction if we know what you want to do...

Perhaps then you want to be using Photoshop elements. Also, keep looking for online tutorials. There are several podcasts out there. Photoshop CS3 is daunting, even if you know what is going on, the learning curve is huge!

try this tutorial site it's very good.

www.tutvid.com I learned a lot from this guy. He explains things in a very clear way and you can follow everything he does on the videos he has on his site. Once you have some basics start to play with it and you will discover new things, and new questions. It's hard for anyone to just explain how to use photoshop, it's a huge software and has a lot of functions.

Good luck and happy shooting.

Louis, I have been learning and using photoshop since 2002 and I still feel like a novice because it is so complicated but wonderful (kind of like a great wife). One of the most helpful authors I have ever read on the subject is Scott Kelby. Some of his books are:

Scott Kelby's 7-Point System for Adobe Photoshop CS3
The Photoshop CS book for Digital Photographers
Photoshop CS Down & Dirty (he has a new one coming out later this year)

These three books have become like bible's to me because they are so easy to use and follow (whether you use a mac or pc). He also has a website at www.scottkelby.com.

I have also recently found that the magazine Popular Photography has some helpful articles on photoshop techniques. Good luck, and I hope this info helps a lot.

i 'm using ps for 1 and a half year now and certainly i cant say i'm even 100000 miles close to becoming a pro!!!
but it happened to have two months break from college and i was already attending an autocad class so i couldnt bear economically and because of my program a photoshop class too.....
so i just ran the photoshop aplication and started experimenting when i finished what i could learn on my own i searched for tuts and found the most helpful onwww.tutorialized.com .....
basically it is the time you want to spend on learning cause learning by yourself requires a lot of search and sleepless nights.....
the basics are crop,levels,brightness-contrast,curves etc for a simple photo retouch...
P.S.1:in the beginning stay away from filters cause you'll think you have done something cool but you cant really control your photo(it looks really amauter....)
P.S.2:anyway if you want something in particular feel free to message me for advise(well if i can i'll help you)

Only thing I think should be said that I didn't see people say already (just skimmed, so I might have missed it.)

is learn photoshop from a design aspect, and a photography aspect (changing colors, highlights, etc.), then try and collaborate them, I've seen so many beginners ruin good photos by going all out right from the beginning, if it doesn't make the picture itself better, don't bother with it.
