I must agree with them. I personally had a hard time when I was a newbie as far as photo manipulation through photoshop is concern. Online tutorials are helpful but most of the steps are complex. I didn't enrolled at any PS training, although I recommend you to try it. I learned photoshop through books and experimentation. After about 3 months of self-study, I am now the layout artist of our print ads in school. I'd be more than willing to answer your questions bout PS..
I think the best is to go to your local book store and buy a book called Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book, it costs a bit of money but is really worth it, I myself knew nothing about Photoshop and have learnt so much. The book comes with a cd that has all the lessons files on it and makes life a lot easier. The book is the official Adobe book so they know what they are talking about. I also haven't found any good tutorials on the net, they are all confusing but I guarantee you will be satisfied with this book, it even tells you how to get rid of wrinkles :P

I feel the best way to learn Photoshop is to just play with it. Grab a picture, and put as many effects on it as you can. Learn what each tool is going to do to your pictures. And also, the best site I have ever found for tutorials is www.tutorialized.com. Just find tutorials that look cool, and do them. Whether you'll ever actually use what you made isn't the point of doing them. You'll learn how to use a bunch of different effects, tools, and styles you didn't know you had. Then you can take that and apply it to your own images. That is how I learned and I like to think I am very efficient at using Photoshop.
Photoshop is very powerful and I have just upgraded to PS3, I also have Lightroom which I find is a must, doing things to the photos just got so much easier !!........
I found the tutorials on tutorialized helpful and clear, but I think it depends on what you want and what you have photographed.
I guess there are no definitive answers and everyone is different, as is our perception, however, we all learn at different speeds and when you find something you want to do in photoshop, try it and see if you can do better than the tutorial then post it here and let me know,.............................coz I need all the help I can get !!
Use the internet!!! My best friends (www.google.com) has helped me with what I know now of Photoshop. These guys are right when they say there is soo much stuff you can do with Photoshop. if you're too lazy to go and hang out at the local bookstore or library... then I suggest googling anything about Photoshop..
Get a Photoshop book by Scott Kelby for digital photographers. It is good about giving step by step directions. Once you can do a few things you won't feel so frustrated, then you can figure out how to do things on your own.
Janna,
For the wedding photography in particular, I am comfortable with 10mm-22mm lens because of groups and confined spaces and it also costs around $800.
For your question in particular, I used TAMRON and SIGMA, found SIGMA slightly better.…
