Front page photo slideshow

Just curious, what determines what photos go into the slideshow on the front page? I thought it might be comment count or something, but after exploring a bit that seems to be false. again, just curious not expecting my photos in there or anything..

Hi Jake, its mainly based on straight photo views. Comments help because they spur interest in photos, but the photos that end up in the slideshow are the ones getting the most views and attention over a certain period of time. People who have a lot of activity and friends on the site tend to get into the slideshow more often because through their activity they are generating more attention to their profile and their work.

alright, that makes sense, I figured it was something like that. Are you the owner of the site Richard? I've always been somewhat curious as to who the owners/opperators are, they do a good job at flying under the radar it seems.

Hi Jake, yeah I serve as a community moderator. But there are a few other moderators at different times. The site is owned by PictureCorrect.com which has many contributors. I'm glad you are enjoying the site.

Seems like alot of very top shelf images might get over looked if they are chosen by views-comments only. Seems like the wrong kind of popularity to focus on imho. I have seen so many here with so few to none that truely do deserve this spotlight & recognition. Especially for any of the new comers here. However.. I also found many of the home pags images to be of wonderful quality. Not sure what the ratings thing is all about nor can I find any FAQ page or site map here. But hopefully in time I will fiqure it all out. Thanks Richard~ :) Lj

I don't really think the views/comments theory is correct.

I had one of my shots appear almost the same day I uploaded it. To this day, it has only 17 views and one comment and the comment was entered after it cycled off the slideshow (at least I think it did).

I have found the same thing.

Pictures that should be on the slide show are not and ones that should not be are. You should only have high quality shots there to represent a quality site. This is what a new member will be looking at when they first come to the site.

I have a friend that she said the minute she uploaded her pictures that 5 of them showed up on the slide show and she just joined the site.

I am sorry, I do not believe in the friends and popularity thing, it leads to cliques, sort of a Facebook or myspace type thing. Who knows the most people, who are friends with the most people. I think the friends thing should be eliminated. It serves no purpose in my opinion. People are not going to keep track of all these people to check all their photos out unless that person is checking theirs out also. I do not think the points thing counts either for the slide show, some do not even have points and only 1 or 2 views

Another question while I am at it, who determines the photos that go on to contest ? Some are not the best that were submitted. Why don't you let a lot of people submit their photos for a two week period or month. Let members go in and vote on them and then that determines the winner. Also, it should be set up differently instead of a person submitting their photo and getting lost because several people submitted at the same time, so no one even comments on the photo. I am not sure how to describe the setup but everyone has their own comment area, you click on the picture and it gives the title of the person, the title of the picture, the camera and settings used, then a place to add your comment, critiques and a score from 1-10 or whatever limit you have. Then the person at the end of the period with the most points wins. Also, give them categories, not everyone is a flower photographer or animal etc. Set of contest for each category.

I have also mentioned before to management that the Photo criticism should be Photo critique, no one wants some one to go in and criticize their photo, they want them to critique it so they can make it better and learn from it.
