help, as im new to photography im looking to buy a white backdrop and im confused as to what to get. mostly for portraiture,i do like this effect, but also normal . can any one help?
that is true, Tresillian. You can purchase a number of dark and white colour fabrics in a thicker silk blend and attach it with velcro to a bar of wood (or other material) on the wall. The velcro would be on both the fabric and the wood bar. This works great...an old photographer told me this trick. You can tighten the fabric at the floor level to keep it taut.
If you're in a pinch, you can always go buy a high-thread count flat sheet to use as a plain white backdrop. King size would be largest. You'll have to wash and dry it, just take it out of the dryer immediately to minimize wrinkles or just iron it well.
You typically use a Muslin, there are many companies that sell backdrops ready to go, or you can get muslin at a fabric store. Here are some links to where you can buy backdrops.
It's not always about the backdrop Light is more Important! U can use a gray paper background and colored gels on lights and get any color you want. Cloth backgrounds such a muslin and slik belds add texture which is nice also! But even if u buy a white backdrop it wont be pure white unless you have two stops more light on the back than on the subject!
