Please help and answer the following:

1. Does Canon provide any RAW files opening/editing/converting software with its entry level DSLRs?

2. Is there any difference between RAW images of Canon and Nikon cameras?

3. Can we open/edit/convert Canon's RAW files using Nikon View NX2 software?

4. Is there any free and good RAW file editing tool available for download?

1) Canon provides at least 2 opening/converting programs.  ZoomBrowser EX and Digital Photo Professional are on the CD's that came with your Canon camera.

2) Raw files are basically the sensor data.  File format is different for Nikon and Canon, and different from model to model in both lines.

3) As far as I am aware, Nikon software will not open a Canon raw file.

4) Current versions of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and Lightroom can handle raw files from all the major camera manufacturers.  The software that comes with the camera can handle the raw file created by that camera.  Some point & shoot cameras do not build a raw file.  Perhaps someone else can comment on "free and good" software.

When I use GIMP I use it along with UFRaw. I think you can use UFRaw on it's own but I only use it to open images into GIMP. I've been starting to use Photoshop and I prefer it but I think GIMP and UFRaw are pretty good.
