This is probably in preparation for the launch of Lightroom 4, which is currently in BETA.

Dont forget friends, ADobe Lightroom 4.0 beta is available free from adobe, simple download, then play without pay, for now anyways. Dont know how long that will last! d

Yeap sounds like a last ditch effect to sell as many copies of lightroom on the cheap before the new version comes out.  Hook you with the old and then release the new version and hope you like the changes enough to pony up the dough for the new version.
