I have a full Nikon DX crop system, but I am interested in moving up to FX full frame. I know full frame is the cats meow, but I was wondering if anyone out there with a D300 is 2 grand happier than a guy with a D700. I have been unimpressed with Higher ISO pictures with my D80 in low light for wedding shots. I guess I really just want to know if a D300 is going to be enough, the highest ISO I shoot at a wedding is 1600. If a D700 or (Gulp) a D3 is the way to go then so be it. Thanks
The high ISO of the D80 is poor as you have found out.
You are thinking of the D700 or D3, both are very fine cameras. the problem you may have is that going to FX you have to have FX lenses:
12-24 2.8
24-70 2.8
70-200 2.8
these are the ones I use on the D700 and they work very well but have cost me an arm and two legs.
The noise at high ISO is only a problem if you get the exposure wrong.
You will not regret getting the D700 but think of the lenses.
Now you mentioned the D300, a very fine camera but noise at high ISO can be a bit of a problem if the exposure is out. The D300 is well worth the money but................
now for the rumour mill. Nikon if they keep to their replacement policy, will be replacing the D300 with a D400 around September time. There are lots of rumours about this but you can pre order a book on how to use the D400 on the German Amazon site
If this rumour is correct I would wait and get the D400 as the noise control will be the latest technology then maybe the lens issue would not hit your pocket so hard.
