My Dear Collegues:
Greetings from the last ecological frontier of the Philippines, Palawan!
I’m EDILBERTO MAGPAYO; Executive Director of Palawan Conservation Corps (PCC) an environmental and youth non-government organization in Palawan founded by a two peace corps volunteer who were assigned here in the island before.
PCC is a non-profit NGO (non-government organization) dedicated to produce responsible environmental stewards by empowering the out-of-school youths from the northern barangays of Puerto Princesa City through a well equipped residential program.
Every year, adolescents aged 16-24, who are unable to attend formal education because of financial inadequacies, are invited to take part in our 7-month residential program. The residential program consists of various training workshops centering on 1) conservation and restoration; 2) organic farming and livestock management; 3) entrepreneurship; 4) arts and crafts; 5) life skills and 6) community service.
The selected youth, or Corpsmembers, pay no tuition or fees for the various hands-on training workshops they receive. The Corpsmembers or youth trainees are required to stay at the PCC Campus inside the Rural Agriculture Center from June to December. Currently, PCC maintains a dormitory and a training center.
During their stay, the Corpsmembers are given free board and lodging and shall pay no fees for the various trainings they receive. Their community involvement and volunteerism efforts compensate for the benefits they receive.
The residential program aims that after the program, these Corpmembers will be able to start a simple livelihood project to support their financial needs employing the conservation skills and knowledge they have gained through the program and be of service to their local community. Since 1999, PCC has empowered 200 Out-of-School Youth with necessary knowledge and attitudes that enhanced their well-being and capacity for making an impact within their communities. Various trainings on ecology, environmental issues, agriculture, leadership, values formation, and personality development are provided in partnership with competent individuals and accredited agencies.
Aside from this program we also have four components, and these are:
First is the Six Months Residential Program for the Out of School Youth.
Second is The Environmental Restoration, in this project we were able to rehabilitate o restored some parts of the environment in Puerto Princesa and most of these sites were closely found in the water shed area of our partners community.
Third is the Alternative Technology, where we implemented in some of our partners. And these are by producing of Bio Sand Filter and Rain Water Harvesting the use of these technologies is to provide clean water supply to their barangay. And then we also had Compost Toilet, this initiative is used to lessen the use of water and at the same time make an organic materials for gardening; lastly
The Information Education Communication campaign or IEC, this project vision is to add more awareness on the people regarding challenges and issues about environment. Part of our advocacy is the Teachers Training Workshop on the Web of Life and the Climate Change. Recently we were able to conduct this training for the elementary teachers of Palawan and they already integrated the book that we publish entitled CLIMATE or CoLlective InforMation about ATmosphere and Earth.
In this connection, in behalf of our program I would like to ask from you’re good IDEA on where can possibly submit a proposal regarding our project and wish that we could work together as partner in helping the future generation to become a better youth of our nation...
