Hi everyone

I am going up in a hot air balloon next weekend here in Brisbane Australia and want to take shots of the balloon being inflated as well as arial shots.

I shoot with a Nikon D200 and have a Tamron 28-300mm lens and a Sigma 10-20mm lens.

any tips that you can give me would be appreciated.

Thank you and best wishes

Sounds like an opportunity to get great shots!

Take a circular polarizing filter with you, at least for the Tamron. It will reduce reflections and deepen the blue of the sky. Once in place, rotate the filter to see the effect.

Pictures of the balloons being filled and rising with the burners going are dramatic. Lighting from both front and back works well, try out both. Try shooting up into the balloon and shoot the scenery below you.

Take lots of memory, take lots of photos, have a great time and enjoy yourself.
I will definately take my polarizer with me. I am really looking forward to it and would hate to not get the shots right. What sort of settings would you use? Particularly for the inflation. I don't want to have such a slow speed that the shots become blurry if the balloon is moving yet I will still need to have it at a slow speed to allow for more light won't I??
I can't say what settings. It depends on the time of day, and the kind of day. With the wide shots, you can get away with a fairly slow shutter speed. The rule of thumb is 1/focal length so 1/30 or 1/60 should be adequate for your wide angle lens or the wide end of your Tamron. If you need more speed, you can either open the aperture or increase ISO, or both. I peeked at your gallery and am sure you will be able to figure it out.
Thank you for your confidence! LOL.. Im sure it will be trial and error.. I just don't want to get it wrong by opening the aperture and then not getting sharp images either... I really appreciate your advice and taking the time to answer. Best Wishes. Beth
Hi Camera Clicker. I just wanted to say thank you for you advice. The balloon flight was amazing. We took off later than I thought we would so the light wasn't really an issue. I have posted a couple of shots for you to see. I had a couple of problems and ended up not using a filter, which was a pity because I think the sky would have been incredible. Oh well... we have to make the best of situations don't we? Thank you once again, you're a legend! :)

The only thing I do not like   is her eye mackup...

You don't like her eye makeup?  Posted to a thread about hot air balloons?  To whom were you referring?

Yes I was wondering about that too.

Beth: I just double checked your 15 pages of photos... I do not see the one I commeted on... SORRY about that... If I do find it, I will let you know... Thank You...

PS.All of your photos are beautiful...

It was a photo of a young women whom I belived had too much eye shadow on... I can't  find that photo right now.... I am very sorry if I offended anyone.

I'm not offended, just confused.  I was wondering if your comment got into the wrong thread.

It  must be?  I'm only in 4 groups... I check all the photos in 2 of them and did not find that photo yet... It was a head shot of a blonde.I'll let you and Beth know when I find it....
