Can you stack layers in Elements?

I have Photoshop Elements 6.0. Can I stack about 40 pictures into one? I'm trying to merge some nighttime sky shots for a star trails picture. I know how to do it in Photoshop (I had CS2, but not anymore) but can't seem to figure out how to do it in Elements. Or can't I? Thanks for any help.

Elements has layers but they work differently than in CS5. The mask is a separate layer from the image and is grouped with the image. I always found stacking 3 images was a pain, I did not attempt more.
