what is the use of the image? a print ? magazine cover/insert/advertising?
if advertising, where, for how long
all these play a role in what you sell your work for

My Local Council is using 3 images I supply on memory stick for reproduction - they will mount & frame them and display them in their offices

Also been asked to do a portrait shoot for a model

a portrait session can range anywhere from $ 200 - $ 500

using your files/one time only for print I would charge between $ 50 - $100 each

each region of the country and each countrys have their own levels of pay as does each photographer
of course.
some people don`t get out of bed for less than $1000 a day or more

Many Thanks for your help - I had spoken to a local - everybody charges differently but your 200 -500 range for a portrait shoot was on the mark. I will go with 50 for individual prints until I get a little more work and get an better understanding of the market place. I can understand the high rate as there is a lot of processing work involved sometimes.

Remember that if you are giving them the files, you need to get more for them. You are giving them unlimited use and every time they print one, it cuts your income per print. You might also try to see if anyone in your local professional photographers guild will help you with local rates. That may be a stretch because they tend to avoid helping non-guild members compete with them.

For sample images I tend to save at 75dpi as Jpegs so they cant be enlarged too much and keep the originals normally camera raw size so I can keep control - I presume this will stop the enlarging ?
