I am trying to focus on lighting on my subjects and my beautiful kids have been willing to be my models ( didn't really give them a choice) haha. Here are a few images I took this past weekend. Please let me know what I can approve on ( other than the twig in front of my daughter's face in one photo). They were all shot using natural light, manual mode.
Hi Tiffany. Nice photos, they're adorable. Out of the three photos, I would say "handsome" is the best of the three.
What I notice on the miriam-1 photo is that the area that is the most focused is the grassy weeds on the right, so just as a tip be sure that on a portrait photo to be sure the face/eyes is where the focus is. The second thing about this image as far as composition is the grass infront of her face is distracting to her adorable smile.
The image Mimi-1, I love the DoF in the image, but again, it's hard to see exactly what is in focus, so I would repeat the same critque as before, to be sure the face/eyes are the most in focus.
Hope this helps.
Tiffany, Those "Beautiful Kids" are exactly that.. I can very much see why you are so very proud of your family. Your son is one very handsome lad and his sisters are going to grow up to be knock out beautiful... Mark this old Chief's words.
On the shot of your Son, I would have moved the camera a little further to the right and started the photo around the right shoulder thereby allowing the top of his head to be in the photo.. The one of Miriam, I personally like the leaf/grass that she has in her hand and up to her face. It's a kid's thing.... Sorta like Linus and his blanket. Mimi warms my heart..
Not being a pro photog., I think they are all keepers but the girls more so....
Hi Tiffany,
I can see you're working with the lighting through these three images. Firstly, you have gorgeous kids :)
The photo titled "handsome", the lighting is nice and natural and doesn't throw and odd colour, shapes, shadows, the natural lighting is well used. I actually dont mind that his titled head goes off the corner, it may look better with his full head in the photo, but sometimes photos with angles like that work better.
Second photo "Miriam-1" I can see what you have tried to achieve. As much as the piece of grass she's holding also creates the photo, its very distracting over her face, probably best to try and avoid anything around the face. It's a nice location and I dont mind the landscape view and off centre view on the photo. But as the background seems to be coming into the photo, I would suggest more of a portrait view style of the photo in this one, with her head and upper body in the framing.
Third photo "Mimi-1" I love the DoF (Depth of Focus) in this, it really brings her out of the photo. Although it does a little off focus around her face, with dark shadows appearing on he face. I understand that children move and always want to change their smile and facial movements every three seconds so maybe a higher shutter speed on the photo to try and capture that moment quicker.
If you need to reflect light and dont own a reflector, a simple make at home one is using al-foil wrapped around a cake drying rack or flat piece of cardboard, works well. If you get your daughter to hold it in her lap and position it angled to her face it can often reflect the light into her face, under her eyes, bringing more light to her face.
The second I would want her to be on the right hand side of the photo and not have the empty space behind her (but that's just me).
third one it's kind of flat and not the same play as the other two with light/shadow. Not bad just not standing out as much as the other two. The eye region seem to be a bit too dark.
