Sorry to hear about the loss. Everyone should be able to see it. They come up in windows explorer.
Try Gimp, its an open source file, that can be download, does raw files, The program, is similar to Photo shop. Hope that helps
RAW uses a specialized softwear such as Canon's or Nikon's to open, also photo shop will open it but if you just want to be able to shoot and send pics via email or shoot to keep on your computer to look at when ever you want, then you better just stick to JPEG. RAW is really for people that like to tweak their images. If that is you then I recommend getting Photoshot for your computer. That said, if you are thinking of taking RAW then converting to JPEG, in my experience you are better off just shooting in JPEG. The conversion to JPEG from RAW doesnt turn out as good as if you had taken the pics in JPEG in the first place. Good luck
All your problems will disappear into mist if you download LightRoom. It is free for 30 days in case I am wrong. I am always amazed at people who spend thousands on cameras and lenses and then complain about $300 for software which is a necessary link in the process -- indeed the cul de sac!
LightRoom not only handles all your RAW woes seamlessly, it also streamlines organization. I came back from 4 months in China and the Philippines with 20,000 RAW images and Lightroom absorbed the nearly 500 gigs flawlessly.
If you download and try LightRoom but have problems see me for help or referrals.
BTW, there are many other considerations with shooting RAW not the least of which is the incredible increase in hard disk needed for backup -- luckily western digital and seagate have great external drives in the terabyte range for around $100.
Another option you might consider while learning RAW is if you camera allows it, shoot in dual RAW and JPG mode and you will instantly have the JPG files you are comfortable with.
You might consider DXO Labs software. It is relatively inexpensive. It does batch processing. It auto-magically corrects for weaknesses in lens and cameras for most high end amatuer and pro DSLRs. I use it with my 40D's. It will batch process files and produce output in diferent formats. It will output in several formats at the same time. So if you want to correct and keep larger images for your self and produce smaller jpegs at the smae time you can.

I believe that there is a 6 month free trial and the actual cost I believe is under $200. It leaves you free to choose your post processing/editing software independent of sensor and glass correction and format conversion.

Another option with the 40D is to shoot in raw and jpeg. I do this and with 8GB cards, I am shooting close to 450 images to a card.
