The Photography Network - PictureSocial

I run a programme that includes a photography project with young people in London's inner city to the East. The project is backed by CMS Cameron McKenna and Thomson Reuters and judged, in part, by the Pictures News Editor for Europe Middle East and Africa. See if you think the 14 year olds did well and if you agree with the judgement of the editor. We have a flickr site here.
The winning image was a controversial candid shot which we can't publish. But the girl who took it was given the opportunity to do a shoot at the Royal Ballet. We'll put her pics up soon.

In what way was it controversial. Isn't that one of the basis' of art to stir things up?
It was a candid shot of a couple on a park bench. The way they were sitting and touching each other suggested an awkward intimacy. The shot was fantastic and even the composition worked. But we had to make a judgement. If we published the image it was likely to be featured on electronic billboards across London and in newspapers. In fairness to the people (who had not signed a consent form and who probably didn't know the image had been taken) we felt that we had to pull it. If we had been a newspaper - we probably wouldn't have given it a second thought - and would have published. But we are not. We were running a project to encourage photography and to have splashed their image across London seemed a step too far. But we agonised over this for ages. There was no legal issue - just the moral one.
