I want a new flash. I am useing a canon 7D. I have been told that the canon 430XE II only works with full frame camras and cropped frame camras cause under exposuer because of read throught lens feature. And the vivitar 468 doesn't. Can anyone tell me if this correct. Also which would you buy for a canon 7D? I have found canon and the vivtar for $240.
Please help

I have a Canon Rebel T2i, which some call a "baby 7D". I also own and love two Canon 430EX II flashes. Full frame sensors and cropped sensors are both fit for the flashes, it doesn't matter its size. You can always increase or decrease the power of the flash to counteract over or underexposure. I think the 430EX II will work great for your 7D, just make sure you also get a flash diffuser! And possibly a cord or bracket to move the flash away from being completely aligned with the lens
Permalink Reply by CameraClicker on May 20, 2011 at 3:15am I have a 580 EX II and a 430 EX II. Both work fine with all digital Canon bodies. The 580 has a higher guide number so it can push light further. Metz also make a compatible unit which a local store says is better than the Canon units, and less expensive. I have not tried it.
I also have the latest PocketWizards which support ETTL. When either flash is on the camera, you can control it through the camera menu and you can set first or second curtain sync. When they are on the PocketWizard, you loose some of the control features and the flash fires between curtains.
If they are the same price, I would get the Canon. I would only consider the Vivitar if the guide number were much higher and all of the features were still supported. You can verify that second curtain sync is working by setting it up with the camera in M mode and a long shutter speed, say 30 seconds. The flash fires before the shutter opens, then fires a brighter flash just before the shutter closes. You can hear the shutter close and the mirror drop. If the flash fires and there is a long time before the shutter noise, you did not get second curtain sync.
