I am thinking about taking courses through New York Institute of Photography. I would like information from some former or current students on their experiences. Ty.

I'd be very interested in this information too.
I get things in the mall from them often. You can get some free brochures and magazines from them if you go to their site. I recommend doing that.
I ordered all the info from NYIP and it looks decent, but it's hearing feedback from someone that has done it, is worth a lot more than a sales package.
Hi I just joined the site today and came across this post. I started the Professional Photographers course before christmas. If you are willing to put the time in this seems to be a great course. Several thing I like
1. Clear reading materials. Sent monthly
2. Good dvd that shows what you have read in the lessons.
3. Having to go out and complete an assignment, makes you think you just cant take what you want any more. Really good for getting you thinking about what you shoot.
4. You get a student advisor you can call or email if you get stuck with anything
5. You work at your own speed.
They have an OK forum, I look in recently but dont post I feel there are far too many pro's on the site its a bit intimidating.
All in all you get out what you put in, if you think you take OK shots this is a great place to iimprove.
I hope that helps if you want to know any thing else Ill be happy to help.
Thank you so much for your information. I appreciate your help.~Aim
hi. i did the nyip course years ago when it was on tape lol and it is a good basic course. but if you have a local college
that's giving a good course you'd like it a lot more. just to meet other photographers and the class room experience
is worth more to you then on line or a phone chat. not knocking nyip it is a good one. but if i had the choice i'd go local.
just my two cent's....rick
Thank you Rick,
Unfortunately the only college that offers photography courses is about 50 miles away from where I live. Since I have to work it is not an option for me. I really need to move. :)

I would have prefeered to go to college as well but Im a contracter so I dont stay in the same place long enough, when i work its very intensive and then i get long breaks so NYIP made the most sense to me Im not sure I like their forum to much and I wish I could go chat to other photographers but its not to be ( home is the Keys so no college no photo shops nada..) so forums like this a re great...the info from NYIP comes on DVD and CD now. Like anything if you want to do something you will find a way.
a good FREE course is www.morguefiles.com or morguefile.com...i dont remembr if it is with or without the "s"...there are several courses free online ...this is a good place to start.
Thanks for the info, Lisa. I just went to the site (without an s) and I found it to be very useful. As you say, it has classroom courses and it is free.

By the way, I'm new and I getting back into photography after being away for about 9 years.
I have been doing the course now for a few months some things I will use but mostly it helps you see things in a better light. How to visualize a photo etc. I also try to attend workshops at photography stores. Any information is better than none I say. You can read the course at your pace and you get honest feed back on your photo assignments. Some things you may not like to hear but at least its honest. Above all else remember its the way you visualized the photo so not everyone gets it, but its what you thought was nice.
I am currently a student in the Professional Photographers course. I am working on my last photo project and then I will graduate in Sept. I really have enjoyed this course. I like the CD and DVD's that come with the course, the lesson books are also very informative. You can take the tests written tests online and get immediate results. I never really have played around on the website much but I know there are many helpful articles. When I did call or email the school, they always responded back in a short amount of time. I like that I can work at my own pace. I admit, there are several things that I will not probably use, but if I ever do need them, I will have the knowledge to do so. I feel very confident about my work and have gotten good critiques from my instructor, Jerry Rice. At first I was a little scared because of this man's professional experience. But then I decided to look at it as a challenge - I have one of the toughest instructors judging my work. Just remember it is you who the picture has to please. I would recommend the course. You can look at some of my photos on my website here on picture social if you'd like to see how it has influenced me. Good Luck!
