Amy (and Eric), I work for NYIP and would suggest that in addition to looking for students and alumni on awesome forums like this, you check out the NYIP Facebook page. It's packed with alumni and enrolled students. They're pretty quick about responding to each other's queries.
Heather, thanks for the insight about the NYI Forum. The Forum is actually an online distillation of our student body; we've got some really active professionals who've been doing it for years on there 24/7, and we have some others who are just looking to learn, share, and talk shop. One of the moderators wrote a great piece for those just jumping into the Forum fray here. I'd encourage you to join despite the...enthusiasm...of some of the Forum's members.
Good luck!
If you are new to photography and do not know much at all, then NYIP may be ok for you. I, personally, started to attend, found the material, especially the cd's and dvd's very old and out of date; the cd's were boring and the response time was atrocious. The forum is a dictatorship and most of those who were on it have moved to a closed facebook site.
There is a ton of great material, workshops, and training available. Don't waste your time or money. Even the Master Photography online course looks as good or probably better than NYIP. If you want the status of NYIP, then go for it. But my bet is that they won't be around a great deal longer (less than ten years.)
