I am thinking about taking courses through New York Institute of Photography. I would like information from some former or current students on their experiences. Ty.

Thank you Kenneth and Deanna for your input. I appreciate any information that I can get. ~Aim
Taking the course now! I do wish we had something local, but that is not available. I started the course about 2 years ago and then life got in the way, so I just started over again with lesson 1 as a refresher. I think the books could be updated, It seems as the photos are from the 70's. but other than that the course is full of useful information.
This looks like a pretty good course. I'm thinking of taking it, although I don't know if it's good for beginners. I mean I've been taking photos for years but I just got my SLR back in march and haven't really figured out all the buttons etc on it. I read it's good for anybody at any level but I just want to be sure. Any thoughts on this, as well?
2 suggestions if I may and I am not a Pro. The course is perfect for what you wish to learn and yes at any level. I have been taking it and found some things I already know which is great and other things which I dont and I learn better way to see things. THe other part well buy the book on your make and model camera and it will show you step by step on what each button and mode can do for you. That is also some of what the course covers but not as in depth as the book will for you. Hope this helps you.
I am currently taking the professional photographers course. I have really enjoyed it and found it informative. The CD's and DVD are very good. I agree that some of the books may need updated, but it is a good all around course. I kinda stalled when it came to the portrait photography. I've finished all my lessons and tests, I just need to send in my last 3 photo projects. I find myself dreading the portraits I need to take. But I hope to spend the next 2 weeks finishing up and getting my certificate. I have been pleased with the evaluations that I have received so far, on my photos. I also like the fact that once I've finished the course I can still call and ask questions etc. hope this helps.
I signed for NYIP last year, paid the course in full and i am very happy with it. Unfortunately i did not have enough time to study. Finished unit 2 and doing Unit 3 now. I actually was more interested going to collage for photography, but there is nothing near me. Hoping my husband gets stationed somewhere where i could go to collage. The NYIP gives me the good basic and understanding!

Amy (and Eric), I work for NYIP and would suggest that in addition to looking for students and alumni on awesome forums like this, you check out the NYIP Facebook page. It's packed with alumni and enrolled students. They're pretty quick about responding to each other's queries.

Heather, thanks for the insight about the NYI Forum. The Forum is actually an online distillation of our student body; we've got some really active professionals who've been doing it for years on there 24/7, and we have some others who are just looking to learn, share, and talk shop. One of the moderators wrote a great piece for those just jumping into the Forum fray here. I'd encourage you to join despite the...enthusiasm...of some of the Forum's members.

Good luck!

If you are new to photography and do not know much at all, then NYIP may be ok for you.  I, personally, started to attend, found the material, especially the cd's and dvd's very old and out of date; the cd's were boring and the response time was atrocious.  The forum is a dictatorship and most of those who were on it have moved to a closed facebook site.

There is a ton of great material, workshops, and training available.  Don't waste your time or money.  Even the Master Photography online course looks as good or probably better than NYIP.  If you want the status of NYIP, then go for it.  But my bet is that they won't be around a great deal longer (less than ten years.)
