Find the thing that interests you about the car and shoot that. The paint, the tires, the motor, the interior. Then ask the owner if theres something he worked especially hard on or something he's proud of or what drew him to the car and shoot that. Look for different angles, and apertures.
Goood mornin!!! Well let me start by saying that I happen to have experience on both sides of this particular issue. I had a 2000 civic hatchback that I showed with Hot Import Nights and I currently have a 1979 F150 that I restored. I have also been affiliated with several car clubs. These vehicles are miles apart, they should be photographed that way. The classic muscle scene, at least in my area, the owners are older, they want classic shots that show the details...like the dash board. If you want to see details you can usually find them in the gauges. The motors, everybody loves a strong power plant, the thing to remember is that these photos are for them, if you don't have a car on their level its hard to understand so I agree, talk to the owners for a few minutes and get to know what their favorite parts are.
Now if you're dealing with imports its all about flash or its all about a sleeper. A sleeper will have subtle exterior modification, usually straight from Japan, look for the details, amber fog lights, red or gold rims on civics. If it looks different to you it probably worth asking about. I photograph those at night, most import owners are looking for a more gritty feel. The 2nd set with the "flash" will have loud paint, body kits, under car neon. They're looking for attention, the detail will probably be inside the car. Good luck and let me know how it goes
Hi,
I shoot cars so here's a couple of tips.
Ideally get them away from surroundings to avoid lots of reflections (a polarizer will help too).
I would try and shoot at dawn or dusk when the sun is below the horizon but this probably is not possible for you.
Overcast weather will also help I live in the UK so normally not a problem ! this will also help avoid bright distracting reflections.
I'm presuming these are all statics if they are panning shots I have a video available that will help on my ProPhotoInsights website.
Good luck and have fun.
Cheers,
Simon

"Thanks John !..the crispness surprised me somewhat as i had used a 13mm close-up/macro extension tube attached to a 50mm Prime, the shot didn't need any sharpening in PS either. Oh, and no not yet, though i keep trying.. lol !!.."
