Hello! My name's Jessica and I'm still relatively new to the group. I take pictures of abandoned buildings and the jewelry I make and I'm working on light painting now, and any other things that catch my eye. I like saturated colors and textures.

I currently have a Canon Powershot SX10IS, which is not bad. I really liked it at first due to it has a super macro mode PLUS 20x optical zoom which is kind of ridiculous for a point and shoot. However due to this there's some pretty severe lens distortion when I take pictures of square things, and the camera has pretty bad green/magenta fringing in a ton of pictures I take.

I'm looking to upgrade to a DSLR soon, but I don't know much about them. Recommendations would be great! I shoot almost exclusively in low light settings.

Looking forward to meeting you all! <3

A couple of the Canon and Nikon bodies have extended ISO range with relatively low noise. Canon is bringing out the 7D which looks like it will sit between the 50D and the 5D. It might be worth looking at. It depends on your budget, too. A DSLR with quality lenses is more expensive than the point and shoot cameras. Visit a camera store and try out a number of cameras. Take some test shots and look at them on a computer. Pick the camera that feels best to hold and provides the best quality pictures.
Thanks for the tips. I'll look into the models you mentioned, and I'll definitely be by more than one camera store before making a decision.
Hello Jessica,
I am kind of in the same situation but I have narrowed my search to the Nikon D90. I went to Best Buy and held all of their cameras & played around with them but I liked the way the D90 felt in my hands. I have not purchased it yet, because I just found a store that will let you rent cameras & they have a large supply to pick from. I will giving the D90 a "test drive" before I purchase it. I do not know where you are from, but you might want to see if there is a similar place that will allow you to rent the camera so you can see for yourself if you really like it.
Hope this helps out~good luck!
I was at Wolf Camera just today and I think I'm looking at the Canon EOS t1i. Now to pick a lens... haha
I'm assuming you are wanting to stay with Canon, and there are a lot of options.

If this is going to be your first DSLR, but you have experience with photography then I would look into the XXD series (20D-50D). Depending on how much you are willing to spend, you have some very good options. I personally shoot the 50D because of its' speed. It is extremely fast with focusing and shooting which is what I need. But it is also very good in low light situations and the ISO (Although some people seem to have problems) is amazing.

The color rendition is awesome as well. You can set the camera up to whatever you like shooting, which in your case seems to be degridation (Same here). There are two custom modes you can set up and the camera will remeber them for later.

If you wait a bit the price should be going down, or you can look on Ebay for a used one or even new you can find some very good and cheap kits that will have everything you need in just starting out with a DSLR.

You could also look into the 40D for a very good DSLR whick will do everytihng you need it to do.

Thank you for the in-depth response, Lawrence. :)
Not a problem at all for a fellow UE.
Indeed! Maybe once I get my new camera we can hit up a location or two. You're in TN, yes? Are on you uer?
Yup Chattanooga TN, so yes we can. I am trying to get into an old school that closed down. My uncle is on the school board so he may be able to pull some strings.
Ooh it's been a while since I did a school. And never with permission, haha.
Yeah it takes away from the thrill but allows for much more precise shots. It was built in the 1920's so it's already pretty degrated.
Agreed. I'd love to have permission and just be able to go wherever I want and not worry about it. 20s is pretty old. Do you know if it's degraded like graffiti or degraded like just time? Cause eff some taggers

"Thanks John !..the crispness surprised me somewhat as i had used a 13mm close-up/macro extension tube attached to a 50mm Prime, the shot didn't need any sharpening in PS either. Oh, and no not yet, though i keep trying.. lol !!.."
