Hi,
I'd love to update to a SLR and am wondering if anyone can help me choose the best option. I Have a Nikon coolpix at the moment, and have found it great, so Nikon is possibly my preference. What is the Nikon D60 like?

Thank you Tressilian. I appreciate your help. Hopefully I will make the right choice.
It's always good to hear from others, as I'd hate to buy something in this area and then be unhappy with it. Thank you Alan
I used the Coolpix 5700 and currently have the Coolpix 8800 but my SLR's are Canon. It is a personal preference.

My advice, if the camera is for yourself, is to go to a well stocked camera store, take your time and try all the bodies and lenses available in your price range. Determine which you can hold most still without image stabilization turned on. Once you know what you can hold still without image stabilization, go through the process again with image stabilization enabled and see how much that helps you. I doubt you will see much difference with short lenses, typically over 200 mm you will see quite a difference.

In many cases, being able to hold the camera still at a slower shutter speed will allow you to catch photos you would otherwise miss. Purchase the body and lens or lenses that you find most comfortable to hold.
Very happy with your comments Camera Clicker. You have taught me of an area that I wouldn't have considered and I appreciate it very much. It's great to have a website like this where one can get help, or when able help others. Thank you very much!
I've used only Nikon gear for years, never had a problem with the bodies or lenses. Also from time to time Nikon also offers a 2 day course at various locations on how to get to get the most out of your camera.

Happy New Year

Hi Murray,
Thanks for your comments, much appreciated. Guess what! I went out today and bought a Nikon D60. They had a really good offer going and it was such a nice compact SLR and should suit my requirements really well.
Can't wait to try it.
We live in Australia and as it happens my husband name is Murray also.
Nice to meet you, hope your new year is really great.

I use canon Rebel XSi and found it to be a great camera. Its perfect for someone who hasn't used an SLR or is not familiar with it. It can operate in full auto mode just like any other plain digital camera and it can also be used in a completely manual mode for the professional. The camera settings can be adapted to any level of technical aptitude and that's what great about it. It allows you to learn digital photography at your own pace without have to go through 3 or 4 cameras as you outgrow them.
I highly recommend the XSi.
Thank you for your reply! I need to learn at my own pace, so you advice is helpful. It's always good to hear from people who are happy with what they have.
I ma be a tad late to make any recommendation. My suggestion would be biased because of affinity for Nikon. I have a D50 and have looked at the D60 (the successor) which has a lot of added features vis a vis the D50 and if, as it seems, you boaght the D60 I feel sure you will find much to enjoy....ciao
I believe the Nikon D60 is a cracker, small light and great qual pickies.

"Thanks John !..the crispness surprised me somewhat as i had used a 13mm close-up/macro extension tube attached to a 50mm Prime, the shot didn't need any sharpening in PS either. Oh, and no not yet, though i keep trying.. lol !!.."
