Hey everyone!

I'm a senior in highschool and about to take my senior pictures. I want them to be unique and different from the norm. I would love to get some ideas for backgrounds or poses. Also take in consideration that I'm taking them in the fall time and I live in a small town in Oregon that is surrounded by mountains and lakes.I would love to see some examples too if you have any! THanks for the help.

Hello Courtney, here are a couple of pics I did for some family & friends who graduated this year. Now, I used them as my guinea pigs to learn but we had a lot of fun out in the pasture, infront of our barn, infront of our tin barn, on the railroad, against a stone wall, etc. I took them around places and we just took shots. If you want to see more, let me know. I need to upload them all to flickr anyway. There are a few of them in my profile, too. Enjoy and congratulations!

If your senior portrait session is important to you then you need to find a photographer in your area whose work you like. Have a conversation with them and voice your preferences and concerns. Look at their samples and then make a decision. I've done senior portraits for over 30 years and have tried to stay current on trends as well as do the traditional so the senior gets a blend of what's hot right now as well as a very traditional portrait. Believe me when I tell you that it isn't easy to do good, even great senior, portraits. It requires knowledge and experience on the part of the photographer to know how to pose you, so you look your best, and how to blend those poses into a very contemporary session. Almost any studio photographer who has been around will have a lot of different backgrounds to choose from. I always try to add several new b.g.'s every year for my in studio work, and try to locate at least one or two new locations for outdoors each year. You will be much better off if you go with an established pro than with someone who is just starting. There is a reason they are an established pro and that reason is that they are much more well equipped to do something that will please you.
I completely agree with Nathan and provided my ideas for background and poses as only that: suggestions. Decide what kind of setting you think you would like such as maybe a downtown city location, or infront of an old car or old gas station. One friend of mine who is a professional shot a girl who was on the train track, carrying some luggage. I thought that was fabulous as in "going away", kinda concept. She had a cute sundress on.
Again I agree with Nathan, I know your a senior and hoping parents will be paying the bill, senior photo's arent cheap for a reason. Yeah you could get joe schmo.. and get the crappy result, but go with the seasoned professional photographer. They will charge a lot more.. but it's all for a reason, he or she know's what there doing, and will get the best result. The pro should understand just like nathan wrote, what is and should be in style, and have according backdrops to match or locations. Hope you get the style and photo's your looking for! And don't be afraid to tell the photographer what your looking for as well, I always ask my clients what they want and are expecting out of a sit, or wedding, or portrait.. and follow what they have in mind.
Thank you everyone for the replies! I am taking them with a professional, but she doesn't have a studio so they are all going to be outside or in old buildings.
Have a "Rock the Frock" photo session it is like "Trash the Dress" but with a prom dress. Have the High School Senior get the dress full of grass stains, water, and Root Beer. What ever they like.

"Thanks John !..the crispness surprised me somewhat as i had used a 13mm close-up/macro extension tube attached to a 50mm Prime, the shot didn't need any sharpening in PS either. Oh, and no not yet, though i keep trying.. lol !!.."
