I was playing with the macro. I really like this picture. It's of my Boston Terrier, his name is Spy.  I only wanted his eye in focus, and it's like a mirror, but I left his nose so you could make out that he's a dog... You can see me in the reflection, which is kinda why I'm considering naming it "I Spy"..  I only really wanted half his face.. I was thinking of entering it this year in a local comp,  but I just don't know.. what do you think? I was debating whether or not to keep me in there though.. should I leave me in there? or is it not okay to be seen? Or should more of his face be sharper?  Any advice or tips?

okay, now that I've uploaded the picture, it doesn't look as sharp as it does in full resolution, but you get the idea I guess!
i liked the way it is but crop out that black rectangular shape on the left side.
thank you.. I thought about that too.. I will do that.. thanks!
I like the image; however I am a Boston Terrier owner. The nose help the viewer to identify the subject. I just wish there was some mildly contrasting background to the left of your dog.
The eyes are the window to the soul.  If you are not there in the reflection, I guess (not to be mean) it is just a close up of a dog's eye.  The fact you are in the photo gives me the feeling that you may have pestered your to take that photo, boardom or maybe it's the steely eye look that a "Spy" gives before getting shot at (think early Bond flicks).  I feel what ever you do something interesting should be reflected in the eye so the viewer has something to wonder/think about.

There is a very sharp line between in focus and out of focus on the face.  I find that distracting.  The reflection in the eye suggests the out of focus part of the face behind the eye is the result of post processing.

Try cropping it to a portrait with about an eyeball width of background down the left side.  The reflection in the eye is fine.

I agree with CC,

the dof does look a bit odd - technically the whites are blown out

which will count against you in any competition..

that sharp line is caused by the shape of his face the blurred part is either part of his neck or body which is set further back..
With a tighter crop to take out the distracting black rectangle, I think It will be a cool picture. I get the impression that the blown out whites and the DOF are the effect you were going for, and I like the way they make your attention concentrate more on the reflection in the eye.
Try playing with the contrast a bit there Jemini, just to make the super-white areas better (hope you're using RAW on this) and also make the black color stronger :-) And that black/grey thing on the left need to go I think ;-) Best of luck! :-D

hi,i like it but have to agree on redoing the crop as i looked at it for awile i thought maybe straight down the nose on the right andhalve way between the dog and the rectangle.oh well good luck it;s a very nice pic.

Sterling...

"Thanks John !..the crispness surprised me somewhat as i had used a 13mm close-up/macro extension tube attached to a 50mm Prime, the shot didn't need any sharpening in PS either. Oh, and no not yet, though i keep trying.. lol !!.."
