I was curious what the purpose of a lens hood was, and I'm curious what the difference is between the hard ones and the rubber ones.

Something to remember is that rubber lens hoods may not narrow the hooding effect on telephotos as well the one's made for a particular lens. And some rubber ones might actually cause some vignetting on ultra-wide angle lenses.
Pentax hoods have a sloted opening to adjust your filter. I can not understand whay other manufacturers can't do the same thing. With that said, using a hood is still worth the hassle as it can greatly increase contrast.
