I recently acquired a Nikon D90, along with two lenses: AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm, and an AF Nikkor 70-300mm. I've noticed that on the AF-S, I can choose the VR and the Manual or AF settings, but on the AF lens, it has a bit of a mind of it's own and focuses on what it wants.
First Question:
If it only says AF before the type of lens, does that mean it is AF-only and cannot manual focus? There are no switches on the lens itself to turn AF on or off.
Second Question:
Can anyone recommend a couple of macro lenses for this camera? I am relatively new to photography, so I still cannot identify the difference in some features on lenses.
Rather vague in your problem but one easy thing to check is: As you look at the camera from the front, there is a switch marked "C" "S" "M".
C = Continuous focusing
S= Single focusing
M= Manual focusing
There is some other settings that is only altered from the menu system. Read the manual on Focusing and Auto Focusing.
Question 2
Even more vague. What do you want to photograph? I have three macro lenses, Nikon 60mm, a Tamron 90mm and a Sigma 150mm. All three are used on there own, it all depends on what you want to photograph
Because I'm so new to using DSLRs rather than a point-and-shoot, I don't really know how to specify. I suppose my problem with Question 1 is that there are no switches on the AF lens. it's just the lens, no options. I'll check out the manual if i can change that via a menu on the body itself. even if I switch the camera to Manual setting, it'll still be Auto-focusing.
As for Question two I suppose I would be photographing plants (flowers or leaves) or bugs. the three lenses you described, what do you use them each for?
Regarding your Q1 -In order to manual focus an AF lens a D90 has switch M-AF on the right (if holding it) side on the camera. Switch it to M for manual focus. AF-S means Auto Focus -Silent Wave Motor meaning the lens has its own motor to use to focus independent of the camera.
Hope that helps.
Q2 - a new DX 85mm micro is priced reasonably. I have not had the chance to used it yet but Nikon has very good lenses.
Good morning all thanks for the comments.This is the place for sharing photos and having a chat there will also be games and other ideas.TJ has suggested a relay game.That goes like this perhaps you start out with a farm photo and ask for a pig.The next person posts a pic of a pig and asks for bacon. The next person posts a pic of bacon and asks for .... etc.Link to the relay game ↓ …See More
"Thanks John !..the crispness surprised me somewhat as i had used a 13mm close-up/macro extension tube attached to a 50mm Prime, the shot didn't need any sharpening in PS either. Oh, and no not yet, though i keep trying.. lol !!.."
