I do most of my editing using ACR 6.2 inside of Elements 8. When I open the raw file inside of Elements, it appears to be a lot duller, and maybe not as sharp. This is the case for both 8 and 16 bit images. How do I regain the the image quality I observed in the raw file?

I have not noticed that.  What colour space are you using in Elements?

Try pressing Print Screen before passing out of ACR and paste into MS Paint.  Do the same when the file arrives in Elements.  Then you can compare them side by side.

I think CS5 has more options than Elements, but principally they should be the same if color management is switched on to recognize the imported embedded color profile.

If you are using the in camera Adobe 98 color space within ACR, is Elements set up accordingly to display the working space as Agrb 98.

Also is have you done a recent calibration on your monitor, i calibrated last week and ended up with a corrupt ICC profile that screwed up my whole color workflow..

Thanks for the side by side tip. The files opened in Elements were a bit more washed out. Applied a slight "S" in curves and this brought the two images closer together.

Hmm,

there should be no need for a curve modification Greg, providing color management, calibration and embedded profile are correct they should be identical?

I have never noticed the problem....sorry.
