I recommend DSLR. But as you know, Nikon release Nikon 1 series. I would have one near future.

eg nikon D60 is awesome camera to step up with memory cards being cheap, and easy to achieve what want.
with cannon it's the same thing, but has a lot more criteria to under stand, with sensational results.
the nikkon is like a mercedes benz in reputation as cannon is a lambergini and more.
for begginers as mentioned in your question nikkon D60.
before you ask i started with a nikkon D60 and moved up to a cannon 5d mk2

A cheap camera (not really that cheap for a student) that has a great lens can produce good results while your learning. :)
