I am thinking of getting a new all purpose lens. And I want to buy an affordable lens that will work later on an FX camera. So I came across the 24-85mm and I read some reviews but they were not helpful at all, some of them were saying it's a fantastic lens but some said it sucks. So I couldn't really decide if I should buy it or not. So can you guys tell me some of your personal experiences with this lens or what you've heard. Also any suggestions for other lenses will be very helpful.
It is heavy and not a lens to walk around all day with.
Image contrast and sharpness are excellent by f/8 and hold up well to f/16, from which point onwards diffraction will gracefully degrade image quality.
I have yet to take a good photograph of a building, portraits not bad.
Auto-focus is slow and I always manually focus but I manually focus with all lenses, all down to my film days.
Why do you want a zoom? At the range you are talking about three lenses stand out
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8
Nikkor 85mm f/1.4
Nikkor 24mm f/2.8
All execellent lenses that will give you more contrast
