I am starting to save for a new camera to update from my current DSLR. So my favourite choice is the D300s. I was wondering if you guys could tell me what you think of the camera and how well it performs if you have one?

Thanks
Mehryar

I have D300, more or less it's probably the same, with some upgrades. Even the D300 works like magic, I'm sure sure sure the D300s will not disappoint ;-) Good choice!
I also have a D300. My only issue is the "plastic" look I get in my images once I exceed ISO 2000. The camera handles 1600 beautifully, particulary hockey shots but I shot a rodeo in the arena at ISO2500 and the images had a plastic, odd look. That is one reason I was contemplating a D700 body which takes the same power pack grip MD_10. Other than that the D300 is a great camera. Doesn't the 300s have 720 video capabilities as well?
yes it has video. So what lenses you recommend using on it?
If you don't already have DX Nikkors then I would recommend that you choose two lenses. 1. Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 (there are 3 options here depending on your budget.) and for wide angle the 17-35mm f2.8 lens. Note they are not designated as DX lenses so they will work later on the FX camera bodies as well. If you want to go DX glass with a wide angle they will not cover your frame on an FX camera...I've heard great things about the Sigma 12-24 DC lens...funny but I think the Nikkor 12-24 is cheaper or around the same price. Sigma has a 10 year warranty, in Canada anyway. So I hop this gives you some guidelines. Presently I shoot DX format and use the Nikkor 10mm fisheye, 12-24, 17-55, 18-70, 70-200, 300f2.8VR and the Sigma 50-500mm EX lenses.
thank you so much! I think that was the most helpful reply I have ever had. :)
I just checked out some of the lenses you mentioned (not the DX ones because I will probably upgrade to an FX camera in the future), the only problem was the price. I'm a student so my budget is very small :(. Especially for the 70-200 f2.8 I think the price is too high for me. But I came across the sigma 70-200 f2.8 and it's only $800 I was wondering if it's sharp and has accurate focus?
I had a D300 for a week one time. It was without question one of the worst cameras I ever owned. I bought it was a back up camera, not primary, and it felt like a toy. I bought it based on Nikon's reputation never suspecting that my Nikon lenses wouldn't work with it in auto focus. Also, it didn't have port for an external flash and it is inconceivable that anyone would manufacture a camera body without a pc port on it. Check it out; all of Canon's camera bodies do. I sold it on E-Bay and lost $30.00 on the deal. I know all of you equipment junkies are going to say, "you should have known". All I know is that I will never trust Nikon again!
D300 has both a hot shoe and a flash sync terminal. It also wirelessly has command module built into the on board flash. Your lenses must be ancient from the 50's before Ai.
it's really weird that youre saying this because I have never heard of anyone complaining about lenses not focusing and anything about the flash. The only thing that people were complaining about on the D300s is that it shoots 720p and not 1080p like the canon 7d. And I've heard the ISO performance is exceptional on the D300 or the D300s, is that true?
I will just add my little bit of knowledge about this subject, I have a co-worker who purchased a new D300 about two years ago now. Within the first week the body quit working, and he had to send it in and get a completely new camera. He also has had a couple of other issues with the camera. I will give Nikon that they made probably the best film cameras there ever were, but as far as digital they are behind Cannon and Sony in my opinion. The sensors in these cameras are made by Sony, though I also feel Sony is pointing to much energy into the consumer based market now. I know of several people who have owned everything from the D40 to the D3, they are many of them that love the cameras but, many who have had a plaque of problems with them. If you already had Nikon equipment I would recommend staying with that brand for budget purposes and their glass really is top notch. If I were purchasing a new SLR Camera on the market today it would be a Cannon 7D, this is in my opinion the best camera for the money on the market. But don't take my word for it, research what you want with places like DP Review and Consumer Reports. I hope that helps and Good Luck!
I heard the 7d is good and I've used it once but I don't like the ergonomics and the layout of the buttons. On the D300s the ergonomics and the buttons are perfectly placed.
Nathan, the D300 has a pc port on the camera.. maybe your thinking of the D3000? But that it does have one, i have the camera in front of me! :) That's weird you seem not to auto focus.. but all my nikon lenses work perfectly fine with the camera.. even on auto focus. But i think you are thinking of the D3000. That's a toy not a camera.

Mehryar.. I like the ISO on the D300s, it's not bad at all.. about a year ago i loved it! but now I have a D700, and theres really no comparison.. The D300s is a great choice.. but really all honesty get the D700.. save up for it. :)
Never had a problem with my D300 or my D2X. Now, my D200 is another matter. Shutter not syncing with the flash has been a nightmare for me because it doesn't alway happen. There are bugs with some lines and every manufacturer has the occasional blip. Nikon's Taiwan plant cameras are of which I speak. Buy the D700 as it is now discontinued and will be dropping in price. Henry's Cameras here had it for $2199.00 for the holidays in July but has since put it back up. But you wanted video also....Buy the Canon or the new Nikon with 1080p due in Sept.
