I am in the market for upgrading my camera, and I have elected to move to a full format camera. In my home town we have a Nikon Pro Store, so I have landed on a Nikon D700. I wonder if any of you are using this camera, and what lens(es) you would recommend for the initial purchase. (I will buy one or two at first, and then buy more when I can afford it.) I am thinking about a 50mm, but would love to hear what you guys think.

Cheers

I'm using a D700. Great choice there Kristian, congrats :-) Go with the 50mm lenses (AF 50mm f/1.8D, AF 50mm f/1.4D, AF-S 50mm f/1.4G), they will produce super clear images with that camera. And they're fast too! ;-)

I got the D700.. beautiful camera! cant go wrong there! I'm using 24-85mm f2.8.. i got that 50 mm as well.. thats all i can afford as well looking to buy another soon as well! But i love the 24-85.. nice range and sharp photo's.. can't go wrong.. gets pricey though near 750.. but nice images.
I have a list now. This is the stuff I want, and I am starting on top, buying my way through to the bottom.

Nikon D700 with extra battery and a 8GB card (this is obviously the first I'll buy!)
Nikkor 50mm f/1,4G
Remote of sorts
Nikkor AF-70-300mm f/4,5-5,6
Speedlight SB-900 flashgun
Sony GPS
AF DX Fisheye 10,5mm f/2,8G ED
AF-S DX Micro 85mm f/3,5G ED VR
AF-S 14-24mm f/2,8G ED
AF-S 24-70mm f/2,8G ED

It's quite an expensive list, but I will have all this eventually! All lenses will have their own UV-filter, and I might buy a polarizing filter some day.)

I can't wait till my tax return arrives!!
Nice list, good way to kill your bank account too! But i like it! Just a thought.. i personally do not use 8GB cards.. to much info to loose.. I've shot a wedding last year and it was POURING rain outside.. a CF card fell in a puddle of water.. all images were gone.. if that was 8GB that would be half the wedding.. instead i lost about 75 images using a 2GB.. Again just a thought.. :)
Ah, that sounds like a thing you'd like to avoid. The reason why I want the 8GB card though, is that I normally do landscapes, and when I get into the spirit of things I leave home for a week, with a tent and stuff, and set up camp somewhere. I don't want to open the camera to many times then. But I guess I can add some 2GB cards to that list, as it's not a lot of extra spending compared to what's already there... ;)
Good list except the DX lenses. Get the 105 Micro instead and 16 Fisheye (both can be used FX or DX mode).
Yeah, I have been looking at this as well. I haven't spoken with the sales rep about lenses yet (except the 50mm). There will be more talks before I buy anything though :)
How much memory you need depends upon how much you shoot and availability of something to unload the card into. If you shoot a lot in a day, you may need several 8 GB cards. The last cards I got were 16 GB because they were on sale so the price per megabyte was less than the 4 or 8 GB cards. If the 8 GB cards were less per MB I would have just picked up the equivalent space, which would have been more cards. Purchase quality brand name cards so the likelyhood of a card becoming defective is reduced.

My advice is to get a good camera bag, and a card wallet -- some bags come with card wallets, and others have card storage built in. That and having large enough cards that you don't have to change them frequently should prevent your dropping a card in the puddle. Keep an eye on the remaining space and change the card when you can take your time and keep the cards safe.
