The Photography Network - PictureSocial

Hi everyone, hope you're all doing fine.

I just sold my Nikon D3000 for a good price because I want to buy a more professional camera. As all my equipment (lenses and SB-600) are Nikon I'll stick to Nikon. Also because I'm very satisfied so far :-)

Now, I always had my eyes on the Nikon D90 and never had any doubt that this would be my next camera. Until now, when it's decision time, I can't seem to decide between the D90 and D5100.

Reason is that the D5100 is newer and has the sensor of the D7000. The D7000 is out of range from a budget perspective. D5000 has more megapixels, newer processor Expeed2, software etc. Also it will be worth more that the D90 in, let's say, 2-3 years.

However, the D90 seems to have functionalities like the auto-FP, commander mode and more direct controls. Handling and ergonomics seems to be (overall) better that the D5100. Also is has a built-in AF-motor which gives me the ability to shop for more lenses (AF-D etc). Some of them have excellent optics for a reasonable price...

Difficult choice for me... I want the D90, but it's almost 3 years old, but out-dated? I don't know...The D5100 is newer and will contains improved components and keeps its value for the next years. But the handling is not as good as the D90.....I also have a SB-600 and want to use its full potential..

Can someone please give me some advice?

Thanks!

Danny

If you can't afford the D7000 I would suggest D90. One reason is D5100 does not have AF motor thus is not compatible with other Nikon lens unless the lens has its won AF motor AF-S or AF-G. Also, the controls on D90 are very accessible with buttons unlike the D5100 where you have to go through the menu.
D90 - all day...
If you can get the D90 for cheaper then D5100 then go for it.  I've seen D300 for around $600 in good conditions in craigslist.

Thanks,

And if they're priced equally? The different between second-hand and new is minimal. Our local camera shop also offers a free 5-year guarantee on all cameras and lenses. Current price is 599 EUR (860 USD) for D90 and 619 EUR (888 USD) for D5100.

In that case go for the D90, you can use the sb 600 of camera and I dont think D5100 has interval timing. and the over all build quality of D90 is better then D5100. The only thing you will be losing is MP and full HD video. But then 12mp is plenty it isnt like your pictures are going on a bill board?
