I'm thinking of signing up for the NYIP Professional Photographer's Course. Has anyone started/completed the course ? - and if so - would you recommend it ?
Hi. I took the course many years ago and I ended up stopping half way through. The reasons being, is that I found the information to be way outdated and so elementary that you are better off learning on your own. I took the course back in the early 90's and I have heard that they haven't changed their course material since then. It's quite pricey as well. I actually learned more by watching other photographers, talking and networking with like minded people and doing a lot of reading and practice. If you need any further info just let me know.
Hi Todd - thanks for your reply. NYIP are offering a one month trial so I could use that to see how up-to-date / relevant the course material is. I'm still thinking about it but at the moment could put the money to better use.
My husband is enrolled in NYIP currently. So far he seems to like it. Granted a lot is common sense stuff, but there are some other things in there that while he knew of it, he didn't quite know how to accomplish it. It would really depend on where your expertise in handling all the ends and out of your camera and what it's capable of, manipulating your environment for the right picture, and training yourself to look for the opportunity. It's not cheap, but I wouldn't really consider it an expensive thing to do. Afterall, you may learn something out of it even if you think you know it all. If you pay it off early, it's like $700 something.... if you pay it off over the 2 year time frame, it's around $900. Most photographers are going to spend a heck of a lot more than that on a single lens. So it comes down to what you think is important? Learning new styles, methods, and techniques along with information to capture a large variety of photos that you couldn't before? Or buying a new lens and not knowing how to use it to its full advantage?
Everyone can always use more learning in life anyways.
Hi KelleyJo - thanks for your reply - I think that the course may give me the motivation to try out things that I might not try otherwise. As you say - compared to equipment prices - the course is good value if it stretches your abilities.
Hey Todd I'm taking the course and so far I find it informative and I also feel the same as Kelly that its very reasonable considering the alternatives.I feel that any knowledge I can get to make me the best photographer I can be is worth it.Sure there are some parts of the course that if you've been taking pictures for some time might seem elementary but I think there is some good info for training your photographers eye and also learn techniques that come from the pros.As well as composing instead of just shooting.I suggest you go to their web site and read the comments from other students check the site out and go from there.I hope this helps.
