Permalink Reply by Paul Brooks on January 27, 2012 at 4:02pm I think that there is too much going on and the eye isn't able to find a focal point with this photo. I believe that if you were able to get a shot with less going on in the background an a nice reflection on the water in front, it would make for a much more eye pleasing phot. Just MHO.
Permalink Reply by Nancy Hall on January 27, 2012 at 4:12pm I think you're right. This one is farther away and has a decent reflection, but the same background is still there.

Nancy I hope you and Paul don't mind me jumping in here but I am just amazed. Paul you are really good at this but know you probably had to go through your own learning curve to get here. Did you do any studies or is it through trial and error that you have gained your knowledge. I know I could get a whole new argument between a good grounding in basics and learning your camera but in your experience what was one of the things that helped
Permalink Reply by Paul Brooks on January 27, 2012 at 5:07pm I have been almost completely self taught. I have basic Art and Composition knowledge from some training in the CAD/Drafting field about 12 years+ ago. I have gained a ton of knowledge from the manual that came with my cameras, as well as from readings from multiple authors/ an addiction to Barnes&Noble stores, and guidance from industry pros from all over the world either by blogs, direct contact, or just studying technique and MetaData. I also have what I consider to be an above average knowledge of Computing and Networking, as well a general knowlege of programming, which helps with editing.
FYI- I have only been into "Serious Amateur" status for a little over two years, and do not consider much of my work to be anywhere near "pro" quality yet, and generally I believe that this is because of a lack of true "photographic training" (i.e. College level classes). Trial and Error works to a certain point, but a desire for knowledge is, IMHO, the key.
Thank you, that really helps.
Permalink Reply by Nancy Hall on January 27, 2012 at 5:23pm Thanks. I love it. I really appreciate your input. And with the black and white image, the colors aren't so garish. I would've never thought of that. What editing program do you use?
Permalink Reply by Paul Brooks on January 27, 2012 at 5:29pm For this, LightRoom 4 Beta. I could have also used GIMP, PhotoShop Elements 8, Photoscape, or Picturenaut, all of which I use, sometimes in mixture with each other. Everything except the Adobe products(LR and PSE, but the LR4 is beta, so it is free till march) are free
Permalink Reply by Nancy Hall on January 27, 2012 at 5:37pm Do you know anything about Pixelmator? You're really good.
Permalink Reply by Paul Brooks on January 27, 2012 at 5:40pm No. I do not use or endorse Apple products, Apps, or software because I'm a PC kinda Guy. Nothing against Apple, but I haven't used their products since the late1990's.
