photography at sporting events - homeland security concerns

How do i get 500mm to 1000mm without breaking the 4inch lens length rule at some sports stadiums?

my 500mm mirror is barely over that and i was told at the grizzlies hockey game that it was to long - it has something to do with homeland security - they said they feared longer lenses because they could hide a gun

the no flash rule is cool but i think the lens length rule is just plain paranoid on the part

That's a stupid rule. I guess you boycott the arenas or ask the management for a more logical solution. I had my cameras searched by the secret service one time and they just asked me to demonstrate that the cameras actually worked. I wonder if they're just trying to limit photographic access by other than badged press.
