The Photography Network - PictureSocial

I just received an email with a link to Adobe announcing that CS5 would be coming out in May. The new version has a lot of interesting items including a new HDR feature. I did not upgrade from CS3 to CS4, but am seriously considering it now. I was going to download Photomatix, but I am thinking that it would be better to take the $100 and put it toward Photoshop CS5. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I received one email too announcing the new CS5 launching this May. Anyway, you can try Picturenaut for some HDR effect for free.
Thank you Kitkat for your reply to my discussion. I have Picturenaut and tried it a couple of times. It seems to work okay, but does not have some of the features of Photomatix Pro. I wasn't sure how much I would use HDR, so I thought "free" would be a good way to try it out.
Best regards,
Dan
Some of the prof. at my college where allowed to try the CS5 demo in the College of Design yesterday (ISU) from all accounts its the biggest jump (from a college standpoint) since CS2 - theres even an application within the program which will allow you to send your project your working on to another individual on the network-- who can than make notes within the document and send it back. (might not be practical for all people but in my college setting I think it would be wonderful.
I've heard it costs more tho-- -I think it was $50 more per adobe program (for the student price)
Thanks for your reply Joel. One of the nice things about being a college student is being able to purchase software at a reduced price! I purchase CS3 Standard a couple of years ago, so my upgrade cost is only about $199. I am glad that I waited and did not upgrade to CS4. Since I posted the discussion, I have looked at some of the information on Adobe.com and see that CS5 is a quantum leap from CS3. You can eleminate an object from your photograph and the program will automatically determine what would have been behind the object and fill it in. That alone is pretty amazing.
Best regards,
Dan
That feature about eliminating an bject is already a fature on newest Photoshop Element which you can get for $65 only. This feature is only good if you have more that one shot of the same scene.
Thanks Jim for your reply. I was already to purchase Photomatix Pro until I saw what Photoshop CS5 can do on their online demo. I think it is just as powerful as Photomatix Pro if not more. Since my upgrade to CS5 is only $199, it makes sense to me to apply the $99 I was going to pay for Photomatix toward an upgrade. I also use Lightroom and I may upgrade to Lightroom 3 after the bugs are worked out in the Beta version. I've tried the free HDR software, but looking at CS5, it is much more powerful.
Best regards,
Dan

Hi Dan - I went to an Adobe seminar last Thursday (for work) PS CS5 looks awesome! I, like you have CS3 and am ready to move to this product. The seminar wasn't just for Photoshop, so they didn't get too far into the program, but what I saw was really great. Tthey didn't show the HDR feature, but the content aware function looks really cool!

I think they just started shipping - I'd love to get some feedback once it is being used in the field (I'm ready to upgrade today)
Hi Cyn, I'm ready to upgrade also. The preview on Adobe's website shows the HDR feature as well as the other new stuff. This looks like a great upgrade. I think I'm going to download the upgrade to my computer and then save it on disk in case something bad happens to the hard drive. I'm hooked up to the internet by cable, so the download should not take too long. This will be a nice early birthday present! I can't wait to start using it.
Best regards,
Dan
CS5 if well worth the money, the new content aware feature works great most of the time. I also use a several plug-ins,OnOne, Topas Labs, focal point and they all work seamlessly.
