Does Nikon sell a remote switch for taking still shots? I have a D3100.  Also what is a good all around tripod to buy?

Amazon.com sells a few different styles of these,

The ones I bought for my D7000 are the yongnuo RF-603 which come with the cable to go from the shoe mounted trigger to the camera body on the D3100 and fires the camera perfectly (Tried this on my old 3100) you can also add more of these triggers to trigger remote flashes...

An awesome tripod for using outside of the studio... http://joby.com/gorillapod/slrzoom/

I love my Manfroto tripod.  It's heavy duty and easy to adjust.
