Hi,

I've recently been told that after a certain amount of images taken on a DSLR, the shutter itself inside can fall apart? Is this true and how many images is the limit before its meant to break?

This news is horrific...surely when the camera is so expensive, you don't expect it to break from taking too many photos!!

Thanks!! Diana xx

Unfortunately, not these days, I can easily do 1,000 actuations in a day at a football match...., on average around 400 images per match....
Yes, this is very true!! My Canon 1D MkII N which is a professional sports camera, with a shutter rated 200,000 - 300,000 actuations, packed up after 30,000, and cost me near $1,000 to repair, and Canon wouldn't pick up the tab, because it was just outside the warranty....... Thanks Canon !! NOT Happy....
$1000! Yikes! I've had the shutter replaced, along with other repairs at the same time, for a 20D and 5D. Both times the bill was about $200.
Yes I agree with you, A shutter replacement on a canon 30D is £170 here in the UK by a top canon service centre apointed by Canon, The shutter actuations on a 30D is around 100.000 but it is like everything else it is only a guide line take for example a car engine some will last for 150K and the same model for somebody else would last 2 or 3 times round the clock, Machanical items break down due to friction causing ware on parts, A camera shutter is mechanical.
$200, not sure why mine cost so much, but when you walk in with a 1D camera, they see you coming I think.... the worst thing is that you have no choice in the matter, you just have to pay... :-(
I have the Canon XS, which is definitely not a professional camera.. I've had it for a year and a half now and I have taken about 20,000 pictures so far. My shutter is still working fine, but I know that my lens needs to be replaced (its auto focus is all out of whack now).
Hi:
If it is an expensive lens then you could have it recalibrated otherwise the cost outways the price of a stanard kit lens.
I think we seem to dwell a bit on the shutter actuations and in the event that one should break down then repair is still cheaper than replacing the camera, anybody having the job done would be wise to have a complete service on the camera at the same time for a little bit extra cost.
