I love my Nikon d5000. I am new to digital SLR photography and it is pretty user friendly. Great choice!!
I've recently purchased a Nikon D90 which is a great camera with live view.

You read D90 reviews on these sites:

These sites also have reviews for other DSLR's including Nikon's D5000.

Also, it's worth searching ebay for refurbished models. My D90 & my previous D40X were both refurbished & I also have a refurbished Nikon SB600 speedlight & I haven't had any problems with any of them. (Refurb's are ex-demo camera's that Nikon check, refurbish & sell off via camera stores or clearance houses at reduced prices)

Good and cheap are usually mutually exclusive when it comes to cameras. I'd strongly advise you to get any camera that has: sufficient megapixel / quality combination for your needs, Manual function so you can set the shutter and aperture, and shoots Raw files. On top of that look out for limited ranges of apertures and shutter values. The risk of getting a DSLR is that you invest in the body and end up with cheap lenses. A suitable lens range + wide aperture is a very powerful combination which enables you to shoot hand held, in low light (which is often the most interesting), without a tripod and at lower ISO (better quality). A similar lens to what you'll get on a compact as 'top of the range' will cost many times the price.

I've used a wide range of cameras and personally prefer Canon - it's not really that important, it's what you do with the kit that counts. Choose whatever gives you best value!
for brand, i wud say for now canon coz now am using canon 40D with only kit lens and 50mm, and flash light (hardly use), so far it had not failed me yet, (feel free to check my humble work)
i choose canon coz of the lens range for future investment and the time i bought my camera it was the speedest (i can say ) can shoot 6.5fps compare to its range that time. but now 7D looks very promising with the HD video function.
but i like nikon's sun/light blade when we use a small aperture but that alone not strong enuf to make me to change system
choosing a camera is depend on your purpose of buying and budget :)
my advise choose wisely think thoroughly :)
good luck

cheers

Get the awesome Nikon D5000. It has tons of great features! Easy to use and not expensive for such great quality DSLR ;-)

Click here for the official website.
I would gfo with teh Nikon D5000. Adorama has factory rebuilts for $525, 18-55 mm VR lens included. It has nearly the power of the D90, at a fraction of the cost.
Having to wear glasses may not be as restrictive as you think (I'm 55 years old & need to use reading glasses)

A lot of modern cameras have an eyepiece focus knob (diopter) on the viewfinder which enables you to focus the eyepiece to suit your vision (I've only had experience with Nikon cameras but I've no doubt that other camera manufacturers have this feature too - are there any other readers using different brands that can confirm this?)

The ability to view your image via the viewfinder while composing your shot enables you to brace the camera against your body to avoid camera shake which IMO is better than holding a camera out in front of you to view via the live view screen which may lead to blurry shots.

I suggest that you go to a camera shop in your area & enquire about DSLR's that have eyepiece focus knobs (regardless of brand name) & try for yourself.

If this feature works for you it'll broaden your DSLR purchase options.
