Okay, so I'm in a black and white photography class at my community college.

Along with turning in our prints for final project (we get prints back), my teacher wants us all to scan our work and give him a CD with all our work on it. He also said to make a copy, because he won't be giving it back.

....I have no idea why he wants copies of everyones work.

Should I watermark them in Photoshop to be safe?

Very simple. If he has a copy of your work he'll be able to tell if, in the future, someone is using you negs to make their prints. That is actually quite common. I've had individuals, notice I didn't say students who obtained the work of students in past classes, re-mounted the work and turned it in as theirs. I would be startled if he is making prints of them for personal use since to do so would violate copyright law, would be plagiarism on his part, and would probably get his rosy red rear end fired. If your really concerned that he may try to abscond with your work make the file size very small, a 5x7 at 150 dpi. It'll look fine on the screen but prints will royally suck.
I doubt the teacher is going to try and steal anything. I agree with Nathan and his assumptions.
