Texture

Hi, I am attending a beginners course for photographers, and have been asked to do some photographs in Black and White showing texture.
What is meant by texture in photographic terms, can anyone advise please?

Any material surface.Like rocks,textile,iron,bark.......

A quick tip. Lighting from the side can sometime really show texture well.
