The Photography Network - PictureSocial

I've noticed that some members are criticizing other members for uploading lots of photos at once. From a site administration standpoint, we want visitors to upload as many photos as they want because more photos have the potential to bring more visitors. Plus, then people can use this site to show off their vacation photos to family members, etc... People are most often uploading lots of photos at once when they are "syncing" their flickr profiles, so a lot of the time they don't have a choice of how many they add, it's sort of all or none. So keep in mind that most of the time when someone uploads lots of photos at once, they are simply transferring their whole portfolio from another site, which we want them to do. Also, criticizing a new member isn't a very good way of welcoming them. Just a thought...

Agreed... to all your points.

That said, as a new member who is 'catching up' I see that there are practical issues. One is simply that pictures by many people that normally might get a good number of views under the new pictures area scroll down too fast. Indeed, *i* miss them.

Would it be possible (and desirable) to do one (or some) of the following:
- have new photos sequenced (perhaps optionally) by date taken if it appears in the exif
- put a limited number of new pics from any member in 'new pics' each day (and, perhaps queueing the excess for subsequent days)
- don't count transfers pics as 'new' (or let the poster mark images not to be considered 'new'
Yes, that is a good point. However, we are somewhat limited by the platform technology that this network is running. But I will put in a request, that would be a great feature in the future.
Thank you for your feedback. I'm not saying that we necessarily value quantity over quality. My main concern is that members (often brand new members) are receiving criticism for uploading photos. When a photographer makes the commitment of transferring their whole portfolio to PictureSocial from another site, I think they should be welcomed...not criticized.
I have to intervene, I saw this discussion just now and I probably am the reason Richard opened this discussion. I am the Criminal who dared to comment on the EXTREMELY HIGH posting (870+ in one move, second or third day in a row, with NO reaction from anybody). So let me explain my point here:

1. I was about to do the same mistake when I wanted to post A COUPLE of photos from my Flickr on another site. I realised what was about to happen and know what? I just made a separate album with those 7 or 8 photos and only THEN I uploaded the album... Of course, I DID CHECK first what's on the site I wanted to enter and which were the rules and only AFTER that I did the posting.Good common sense, actually... And by the way, the posting was to be made on My shutterspace - another Ning site. PS applied some of the ideas and logic of that one in the transformation of last month - which I consider a good work.
2. There is a misunderstanding (or mislead ?!?) about Flickr. In there, each member has its OWN SEPARATE account AND GALLERY where he uploads as much as he wants or is permitted by the type of his account. If he wants to post thousands, fine, but he has to pay above a certain limit. Posting on the main area and groups is accepted WITH LIMITED NUMBERS ONLY and if the viewers are interested after seeing couple of photos, they go and see the rest in the author's gallery. Of course this includes the family, friends and so on who mostly go directly there skipping main posting site and definitely the group post area.
3. Richard, nobody ever said you value quantity over quality, on the contrary. But some of the people here - and I am included - fear that this will happen shortly unless something is done FAST.
On the other hand, as I told you yesterday - if you or another one of the people who are entitled to would have said something to the Massive Posters so far the situation would have been different. If what I did was SO wrong and I was SO rude and I affected SO much the peace of mind of the respective poster, how come most of the ones I commented on are now my friends after THEY added me first on their list? Explanation is simple: immediately or in very short time they realised I was right, because a lot of people got bored flipping through so many pages of one poster and did not find the time to look at their correctly posted (this time) photos. There is like a self regulatory mechanism which IS WORKING and you should encourage, not suppress it.

I spoke too much already on this matter and humbly ask the discussion members to excuse my behaviour. So, let me have some practical suggestions/options to solve this ( some of them have been posted earlier by others but NEVER took into consideration):

A. Build an upload facility directly to each one's account/ page with the possibility to transfer some of the photos to the main posting page ( if you so much envy Flickr, take the good parts from them)
B. Post high in the main page kind of a Rules of Posting in which you should plainly explain with the elegance common to Picture Social WHICH are the general guidance rules to be followed. Most, if not all of the serious Photo Sites have this kind of introduction and I know nobody who got scared by reading AND complying with them
C. Establish a "common sense" limit for daily posting IN THE MAIN AREA so as we other ordinary contributors will continue to be Phisically capable to view/enjoy/comment/help all or most of the photos posted. Wasn't it until lately the main goal of this site? (Photography wise, of course...)
D. Encourage GROUP POSTING and discussions. Group shouldn't any more remain "places where to enlist, say hello and affirm you are interested" but will become this way real discusions and ideas/knowledge exchange areas. Finally, the whole PS will benefit of that.

If you can accomplish fast enough the rather easy to do things above, you will notice shortly that the number of Photos added on PS will increase DRAMATICALLY, while the main area will keep the value it deserves. This is a special and very good site and we all beleive in it. You should also...

As I told you, if numbers really are a target in this stage of development, I have in different storage some 15-20,000 photos which I will be happy to upload for a good common cause. If you all so prefer, instead of having a separate gallery I could even upload them from Flickr in packs of - let's say - 600 pcs per post and I will not protest on your comments (lol).

By the way, if nothing will be done in this direction shortly, I will continue to post the Massive Posters in a moderate and careful manner (not to offend or scare anybody) because I love PictureSocial and I think it is easy for it to have a good future. After all, most of them will become my friends sooner or later if we have common ideas and hobby, as the history show already...
I have to cast my vote right along with Don and Tracy and Douglas. I still haven't uploaded more than 50 shots here, even though I have well over 10,000 on my hard drive. Those I've uploaded are the ones I've put some effort into. Any shots that I feel are ok to share but not worth critical comment or review, I send to Webshots. The only thing special about Webshots, and I'm sure the same can be said for Flickr, et al, is that they are huge. It would be a shame if one day that becomes all that is special about this site as well.
Sorry Richard, I re read what you wrote above. You affirm some things that are simply mistaken. Please find below my comments in capital letters:

"My main concern is that members (often brand new members) are receiving criticism for uploading photos"

WRONG AND MISLEADING: THEY RECEIVE CRITICISM ONLY FOR UPLOADIN TOO MANY PHOTOS IN A POST.

"When a photographer makes the commitment of transferring their whole portfolio to PictureSocial from another site, I think they should be welcomed...not criticized"

AGAIN DEAD WRONG! Nobody is TRANSFERRING but merely DUPLICATING portfolios. And anybody is and should be of course welcome on PS, IF they do not block the normal good activity of this site.

I speak as one of the guys who try to see ALL the photos here, comment and maybe learn from them, not from the posistion of an OCCASIONAL visitor of the main posts page.

I was a newcomer few months ago and I was received open hearted - which helped me a lot, thank you all for that ! - but I also know how it feels when your photos maintain the level of 1view for a long time... or forever.
Although this could be against what you suggest in your first sentence, I am actually struggling FOR the right of the newcomers to have THEIR photo seen and appreciated. A big grin and a welcome in the beginning and then a rather total lack of interest no matter the reasons is not my way of welcoming someone, sorry !
Hi richard as myself a newbie i hope i have the eligibility to comment on this discussion.

First of all i would like to congratulate you, on the effort of bringing several professional photographers, learners with heartly interest on this free site.

When i registered for this site, i browsed several old users and came to know about the picture to be posted and the activities on the site.

I strated with few couple of photos and immediately i got comments from photographers speaking techniqcally too. I never felt of filling up my all picture here to share. And i hope this is not a site to upload many picuters and share them with family and frds.

Last week i almost deleted several photos, which seemed common to many frds. And i am trying out with different shots and improving my skill to upload value picture to share th PS frds.

Once again its a valuable website.
