I have been told several times NOT to buy a camera "Made in Japan",the reason they say is that you will have to send it to Japan for repair, warranty or not, well, after talking to Canon (email) I have discovered that this isnt true, its NOT where the camera was made, but WHERE it was purchased,if it were bought in the USA,NO matter where it was made,it would get serviced in t he USA........NO penalties,NO additional fees..........
This may not be the case with gray market cameras. What is important is that they are made for the US market, not just sold by a US retailer and come with the proer warranty card.
The issue is not where it is made, but rather where it is intended to be sold. Different countries have different trade & business rules, tariffs, taxes, etc... A camera with a USA warranty has had all the proper fees paid on it to be sold in the USA. It's easy to find the same gear slightly cheaper with an international warranty. These cameras were not intended to be sold in the USA, and the USA warranty centers may not honor the warranty.
